Kathy was hoping her computer would be down for one day midway through the past week but it looks like it must be taking longer, generating her absence here.
Just wanted you all to know she's not ignoring you!
Hope to see her back here soon. I'd go crazy without my computer!

It finally returned this morning! The easy fix would have been to format the drive and start all over--but that could have wiped out years worth of various files.
What I'd like to say is that this began with a false alarm from my then-current A/V program--saying that a website had infected my system with a virus.
One had to alter files to supposedly remove the virus. At one point I was totally cut off the internet and was not able to read the message board for that A/V program. When I did get partial use of the internet again, I was able to read that there was no virus at all--the false alarm went out to everyone who took the July 16 update.
Did a bit more reading when I was finally able to and I've seen that these false alarms are becoming all too common--no matter which A/V program it is. So, basically, I'd say that if you get a warning from yours, take the time to do a check with a good competitor's online A/V or download one of the good free ones and run that before doing anything about the virus warning you just received.

Glad to have you back!!! It's amazing how spoiled I have become in a few short years with the internet. I don't know what I would do without it!
Love and hugs, Teresa and Ricky

When you think about just how much you actually DO on the internet, I think I could have lived without a phone for that length of time easier. Just think--most of us do at least some of our banking on the internet, and many of us order various things online too.
Even though it took the time it did, I would have been VERY unhappy if I would have had to give up all those files--some of them 6+ years old. A few years ago, my very old system just gave up. We got some of the files back from the hard drive, but it was the hard drive that was quitting. In some cases, it took me a year or more to go back and find some of the things I'd had on that old drive.
I think if I had to choose between having it in the shop for a week or needing to go back and look for some of those files as I did when the very old one went out, I'd take the "easy" way--and that would be to do without it for the week I did. ;)

What a nightmare! Any sense that this problem was a hack? It seems very odd.

It seems that many of the A/V programs are coming up with false alarms as of late. When I was able to use the internet a bit during the problem, I Googled the virus that was supposed to be on my system. The hits took me directly to the message board of the software company and I was then able to see that this had happened to everyone who accepted their A/V update for July 16.
Since then, I've started reading this Security Forum regularly:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/security
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20905013-Kaspersky-Error-Bug-or-False-Positive-Need-Help
And above you see an A/V program different from the one I was using having a false alarm.
