Re: Diabetic Chihuahua in FL Needs Foster Home
I think one of their other posts said 4 lbs, so I'm worried that the vet may have been too aggressive increasing insulin for him. It looks like he was on 1 unit (don't know what type of insulin) when he first came into the rescue, but I don't know how that's changed since he's been staying at the vet. The rescue worker who originally had him (I'm guessing before the first foster that backed out) also said she was feeding him 3x a day to try to get him to gain weight. We all know how well that works when BG is so high...
I really do feel bad for this guy, and I hope that he finds a great foster/forever home that will be able to give him the care he needs.Mandy and Piper | Border Collie/GSD Mix | 01/01/2002-10/31/2015 | DX: Diabetes- 09/18/12, Bladder tumor- 09/18/14

Re: Diabetic Chihuahua in FL Needs Foster Home
I have a Chihuahua that was at 6lbs for awhile now 9lbs.Surprising enough dosing is not difficult. I hope the little one finds a home.so he can get rid of the stress of needing a home.Last edited by Ann Renee L.; 06-02-2015, 09:54 AM.

Re: Diabetic Chihuahua in FL Needs Foster Home
Sometimes these little ones need breakfast,a snack at lunch, dinner and a snack at bed time to prevent hypos...
If they could get him on the local tv there maybe he would find a forever home.
He sure is a cutie!!!!Last edited by Ann Renee L.; 06-02-2015, 10:04 PM.

Re: Diabetic Chihuahua in FL Needs Foster Home
Good news! Rooney has a foster home! I'm still a little confused as to who it's going to be, but he has one! They said that someone with two other chihuahuas was going to take him this morning, but then they called my coworker and asked her to take him, since the vet is saying he's having more issues with biting (my coworker is a former vet tech, and also has experience with a diabetic dog). This morning, the person from the rescue was talking about dropping Rooney off to her at work tomorrow, but it still says on their Facebook page that the other person is fostering.Mandy and Piper | Border Collie/GSD Mix | 01/01/2002-10/31/2015 | DX: Diabetes- 09/18/12, Bladder tumor- 09/18/14

Re: Diabetic Chihuahua in FL Needs Foster Home
I can update a little more now that I'm home. They have him on Novolin N once a day. They're dosing him on a sliding scale based on his BG. The vet has an area on his shoulders shaved that they've been giving his injections in. It looks like it's sore for him. They've been checking BG by drawing blood from a vein each time. My friend is going to shave a spot near his tail and try to test him there. They sent her home with an AlphaTrak 2. I told her about this forum, and she was lurking and reading yesterday, so maybe she will join soon.Mandy and Piper | Border Collie/GSD Mix | 01/01/2002-10/31/2015 | DX: Diabetes- 09/18/12, Bladder tumor- 09/18/14

Re: Diabetic Chihuahua in FL Needs Foster Home
Poor little Rooney. He got dropped off to my friend yesterday afternoon. My friend tested his BG last night after work (and before she fed him). It read 29! The vet had given him 3 units of insulin that morning. She took it again to double check, and got 37. She fed him and gave him some karo too, but didn't give any insulin. He was only up to 50 a few hours later, so she gave pancake syrup. He was up to the 100s by the time she went to bed. This morning, he was mid-300s, but he didn't eat much. Since she was bringing him to work, I said to give 1/2 unit, and we'd keep an eye on him at work. He did good at work. She got him home and tested. He was at 103. He only had 1/2 u this morning and he didn't eat a lot either, so I told her to wait and test again. She just told me he's at 209 now, which is definitely better, but we're still worried about giving him insulin. She decided to give 1/2 unit again, and test again later to make sure he doesn't drop.
I think the vet was seriously overdosing him and he might still have a lot of excess insulin in his system. Their sliding scale had her giving him 2 units this morning, and I'm glad we didn't go by it! He's a bit bipolar in his attitude right now. I think all the poking and prodding at the vet, plus the huge BG swings just have him scared. I'm hoping once he gets more into a routine and realizes no one's going to be hurting him, he'll get much better. The vet did not keep very good records on when he was fed, what times he was tested, or even how much he was fed. He was also very dirty, so it looks like he was probably laying in his own filth there. They also somehow lost his bed and crate that were left with him. It doesn't seem like he's had an easy time these past few weeks, so I'm hoping some stability and TLC will get him straightened out.Mandy and Piper | Border Collie/GSD Mix | 01/01/2002-10/31/2015 | DX: Diabetes- 09/18/12, Bladder tumor- 09/18/14

Re: Diabetic Chihuahua in FL Needs Foster Home
oh wow that sounds like a dose a bit to much for a little guy with some eating problems
yes dosing for the little guys can be challenging actually my jesse who is a medium size dog is on a fairly low dose
home testing once again comes through and shows the necessity of itJesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .
