Please can anybody help .? My Siberian Husky has just been diagnosed with Diabetes. He's on 16 units of caninsulin x2 daily and we're monitoring his blood sugar every 2 hrs as advised by vets. Highest reading tonight is 38.6(EU reading) which I think is well over anything I've heard of.? He's not really been down below 20 for the last week. Any ideas of other ways to help lower his sugar.?

If you have access to a vet or pharmacy today, people sometimes use a fast acting insulin to quickly give relief. It is type "R" insulin over here. You have to be really careful because it is potent but that is what an ER vet would do

What about ketones? Do you have strips that you can check his urine for ketones? that is the most dangerous as it can be very very serious. In the US we can get them at a human pharmacy.

sorry, I have no idea where you are LOL. You can ask for ketone sticks and R insulin at Walmart

Re: Newly Diagnosed Husky, sugars very high.

        Welcome to the forum.

16 units does not sound like a lot of insulin for a husky.
What is his weight, and what are you feeding?
Usually it is just a matter of increasing the insulin till you get a lot better numbers. You are probably aware, but to compare most numbers on this forum, just multiply your by 18
If you can give all the info you can think of on your pup, we can help you figure out how to proceed.

Thank you Judi, we're in the Uk. I've asked the vet about urine testing and they haven't really come forward with this as a solution. I've called the out of hrs emergency vet and am waiting for a call-back. He seems quite well in himself, just eating and drinking like crazy. It's all very new to us. Would you consider 38.6 which is over 600 US conversion (I think) as dangerous for him.? Thanks.x

Sorry Joan he's still on a dry mix with fresh chicken or fish, the vet is prescribing a diabetic food tomorrow. He has an allergy to rice .

Re: Newly Diagnosed Husky, sugars very high.

16 units is a correct starting dose for a dog his weight(figured at 1/5 unit per pound) so that is a good starting point. It takes some time to get to regulation so the starting dose is usually conservative.

Can you post some of his other numbers? If you have fasting(before meals) and and at some intervals in between?

Are you feeding two identical meals twelve hours apart? Are you injecting immediately after eating? Are you giving any snacks?

Also, out of curiosity, did the vet tell you to test so often? Many vets in the states don't recommend testing at all so that is a surprise. I just wish that they would have told you what to look for doing this testing. The high numbers can be very unsettling and some further information might have been helpful. Dogs deal with high numbers better than humans - the biggest threat is ketones that can cause serious problems. You can pick the ketone strips up at any human pharmacy I would think.

food and insulin and exercise are key ingredients towards regulation

let see how Neo ,s blood sugar readings are a week after he starts his new food, test as your changing food k. start 75% old to 25% new then keep adding in more of the new food

Re: Newly Diagnosed Husky, sugars very high.

Hello and welcome from another UK member.

You can certainly get keto-diasticks from Amazon (and probably just from a chemist here), and then it is quite easy to keep an eye on the possibility of ketones.

We find that exercise can dramatically affect our dog's blood sugar levels so that might be a way to help reduce them somewhat, while you are working towards the right insulin dose. We have found that with vigorous exercise our dog can sometimes drop nearly 10 points in an hour, which is quite alarming if you aren't monitoring it carefully.

Each dog has different insulin needs, but just as a comparison our dog weighs 30 kg and is on between 13-14 units of Caninsulin twice a day. It may be that your dog is not yet fully able to process the injected insulin so you may find his sugar levels drop a bit as his body gets used to it (assuming that it is a very recent diagnosis).

It's great that you are able to test his blood, and that your vet encouraged this. How did you get on with the vet last night/ today?

Also, it's never good, but Sissy has been up to 800!!!!! As long as he doesn't stay there and does come down, that is a good thing..

                      Good luck,

Thanks there is so much help for us here. Neo was at the vets today and although the readings are high, the caninsulin is apparently working. He seems a lot brighter tonight . I was making the mistake of feeding at his usual time 5pm and then giving his insulin at 8pm...disastrous I know but we are very new. I've held back on his main meal and just fed him a few green beans and carrots as snacks(which he loves). He's had his jab at 8 and he's a lot happier tonight. Good to know there is somewhere to turn. xx

its a new reality and it takes sometime to get use to for everyone

a few months from now this will become the new normal and there is no reason that the pup or you cant enjoy a regular dogs life happy and healthy

there maybe some limitations but the closeness you will develop with your baby because of this challenge will be even stronger

Well it's been 3 months since Neo was diagnosed and it's been a roller coaster so far. His bloods have been as high as 40.1 (700's u.s) which has been alarming. We're at the vets tomorrow for ACTH test and a scan to see if there is something else going on as the insulin is up to 26 units and he's still not responding. :. Thank you for all the advice so far.
