  • 4th of july

4th of july can be hard for dogs because of fireworks and our diabetic dogs are more susceptible like my jesse . In previous years the anxiety was so bad that she would get grand mal seizures from them due to her epilepsy . This also placed huge affects on her blood sugar going low but mostly high

Last year was her best year she had as far as dealing with them . First her symptoms of epilepsy have all but disappeared for the last couple years and her anxiety has been reduced but last year i started to desensitize the affects through you tube videos that provided the continuous sound of fireworks . I slowly raised the volume to have her become more accustomed to the sound which was a big success last year with far less anxiety

At times i played it while the fire works were going off in the neighborhood to help to associate them with the sound on the video . Hopefully she has an even better year dealing with fireworks

Yes Judi I tried a few things over the years like rescue remedy and a thunder shirt with inconclusive results . We are in the same mode as last year starting to play the fireworks sounds and hope it helps once again . I wish i figured it out earlier but better late than never

Just an update on the 4th . Jesse had her least anxiety filled fireworks extravaganza this year . The desensitizing really worked well and we had allot of illegal fireworks going off in the town Jesse just lifted her head when she heard a boom and not run around the house with her tail between her legs for hours on end

Many people in our area are using CBD treats and oil for the calming effects. I don’t know if or how CBD products affect diabetes. I have heard it also helps with inflammation and pain.
Maggie - 15 1/2 y/o JRT diagnosed 9/2007, Angel status on 6/20/16. Her mantra was never give up but her body couldn't keep up with her spirit. Someday, baby.......

I thought of that at one time for jesse for her seizures from epilepsy and when it became legal for recreation her seizures went away on there own . Her anxiety has greatly reduced also . Wish i new why and could duplicate but jesse isnt telling

Its something many dogs suffer from and yes amy it does look promising and hope to see more information for dogs on use and results . It could eliminate or greatly reduce the need for using steroids and those medications that derive substantial side affects . Of course with our diabetic buddies is always a concern how they could react but for the countless others it maybe a no brainier
