  • Weakness in back legs

Our pug Jables was diagnosed with diabetes in Jan. 2018.

The main problem we have had since then is that he suddenly went blind from cataracts in May. He was very sad and scared. He had cataract surgery on June 12th. He had now recovered his sight, though we still need to worry about glaucoma. He has another recheck in a couple of weeks. He still gets 3 sets of eye drops , 3 times a day, but thank goodness he is out of the cone. His sight improved during the weeks after surgery. and now his sight seems as good as it was before he got cataracts.

Anyway, around the time he was diagnosed with diabetes, or perhaps a bit before that, we noticed that his hind legs were getting weak. Our local vet says it is not related to diabetes and referred us to a neurologist (who he will be seeing in two weeks). His hind legs seem to gradually be getting a bit worse, though he is able to get around and even climb stairs. He has trouble on hard floors--his hind legs tend to slip, and he moves them a bit crookedly.

I'm wondering if any other diabetic dogs have had this problem. Could it be a rare side effect of diabetes? We had a diabetic cat whose hind legs got weak, but he improved greatly after we started giving him insulin.

Jables gets 9 units of Caninsulin twice a day but his legs aren't improving.

    Re: Weakness in back legs

    Hi and welcome.

He may be experiencing diabetic neuropathy in his hind legs. Several of our members have gone through this and used methyl b12 to solve the problem.

Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

      Re: Weakness in back legs

How is your dogs regulation ? usually once insulin is started and the numbers come down the leg weakness usually improves like your cat

Its possible diabetes can aggravate the nervous system which could be a spinal issue where the messages getting to the back end isnt working as well

they do have a type of bootee dogs can wear on their paws to gain traction on wood floors so there are things you can help with that

As mike suggested B-12 seems to help

My jesse is almost 14 and her back end is not as strong mostly jumping up on things

A neurologist maybe helpful to possibly diagnose or figure what it is or not
