Re: New diagnosis!!!

Great news!!!!!

Make sure you check the ingredients on the baby food - some of them have onion, which is not safe for dogs.

Re: Maggie is an angel today! June 20, 2016

I'm certain it was Maggie letting you know that it was time. She wanted you to know that she was ready and that someday she will see you again. In the meantime, she can see, and she can run, and...

Re: Introducing Maggie - Diabetic 8 years!

Absolutely. I felt that way about Sparky for months. It was only after I let him go, and close to a year later finally got the courage to look at pictures of him near the end, that I was certain...

She should be but you can always drop the nighttime dose a bit just to give yourself a cushion.

Re: Obi: can insulin cause allergic reactions? Not hypoglycemia, but an immune respo

Puzzling symptoms, but yes, definitely dogs can be allergic to human insulin and can develop antibodies to it. That's one big reason some dogs are switched over to vetsulin.

Re: This is playing on my mind. Would you report/say something to this vet?

I think it's reasonable to kindly let her know. I'm sure it is overwhelming to be a new vet trying to treat life-threatening problems.

Re: Sweet Lobo... January 31, 2016

Oh, gosh, I'm so sorry to hear this. Lobo must have had something else going on besides the diabetes. That's what happens so many time when dogs are difficult to regulate.

I'm sure he is running...

Re: Help needed- 40U to 50U conversion

I used to give Sparky a tiny, tiny little bit of peanut butter after every injection and test (literally about the size of 2 grains of rice). He thought the peanut butter was fabulous and totally...

Re: Help needed- 40U to 50U conversion

First off, are you warming the syringe before injecting? Sometimes cold insulin stings. Try taking the syringe after you have drawn up the insulin and holding it under your arm for 10-15 seconds.

Re: KirbyK

Lots of people here on the forum find that their own judgement is much better than the vet's advice. As well meaning as most vets are, they are simply not very experienced in canine diabetes.

Re: Tiki just diagnosed with diabetes...sleeps a lot.

I don't know of anyone who gives injections more than twice a day, but hopefully someone else will jump in and offer advice. Possibly if you are using a short acting insulin it will work.

Re: Help I'm reading the boards..

Dogs can do well on lots of different types of food, and it doesn't need to be prescription. I would look for something with moderate protein and carbs, low fat. Diabetic dogs are prone to...

Re: Help I'm reading the boards..

You can buy urine test strips to check for ketones. If the reading is anything over "trace" your dog needs to be seen by the emergency vet and probably hospitalized. I'm so sorry that your original...

Re: We're new to this. Four days in. Please help!

I second the vote to not inject before eating. If you do inject and then your pup won't eat you're probably going to have to make a trip to the emergency vet for IV glucose.
