Re: Thank You!

OK, I caved in. Presenting---Gabby! An almost 5 month miniature schnauzer. I've had her almost 2 months. I hope the new profile pic is showing.

Seems odd that after putting Mattie down, there's...

Re: Thank You!

It does seem different without the caretaker thing going on. The morning routine was to give her fresh water, a half cup of food and an 8 unit injection. Then carry her down the steps, put on her...

Re: Thank You!

Thanks all, for the kind words. A while back, Mattie had developed a urinary tract infection. I grumbled at the vet's office about having to put the meds on my credit card, as I was broke, missing...

Thank You!

I haven't posted in quite a while, but occasionally checked in. I just wanted to thank all of you for the info my vet never shared, and getting me involved in Mattie's treatment. I was a regular...

Re: Accuracy of Home Testing

Patty, I guess I assume it did absorb completely if the meter beeps and starts its countdown.

Since we just got back from a 2 mile walk, I'll test again.

Accuracy of Home Testing

I've been fairly regular with home testing Mattie's glucose levels. I use the Relion brand strips and meter. But something has me concerned-- I tested Mattie a few minutes ago, and it read "Lo",...

Re: Adjusting to blindness?

Mattie has been blind for several months, and seems to have adjusted well to it. She seems to not be completely blind, but close enough. She's cautious on stairs that she's familiar with, and isn't...

Re: Stress and blood sugar?

As far as I know, no treats are given at the groomer. They used to give them to me to give to the dog.

I really don't have a curve, just random checks. First thing in the morning if I suspect a...

Re: Stress and BG Readings

Sometimes her appetite fluctuates. Ravenous or indifferent to food in the morning. When feeding twice a day, sometimes her food would sit until 10:00 P.M., if she ate her breakfast.

I just...

Stress and BG Readings

Hi, all: I was enjoying the cucumber thread, and thought a trip to the farmer's market may be in order.

Anyway, Mattie's BG is usually 95-140 about six hours after an injection. (Between 8-10...

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie had Major Seizure

The blood was drawn about 6 hours after her shot. I did try the Diastix, and got a reading of what appeared to be 400 about 12 hours after a shot.

Some day, I'll work up the courage to use the...

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie had Major Seizure

OK, old topic. I took Mattie to the vet and had a blood draw. 101! Perfect! I would definitely say the grain free dog food made the difference. Previously at 15 units 2x a day, she was still over 300...

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie had Major Seizure

Well, I tried the dew claw pad on the deepest lancet setting, nothing. I tried the ear, and got a small insufficient dot. I haven't tried the lip. I have been backing off on her dosage. If I just...

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie had Major Seizure

OK, since I use Reli On insulin, I purchased their monitoring device, as well. The "Micro". Haven't done it to Mattie yet. But apparently, I'm not diabetic! My reading was 82. I haven't had breakfast...

Re: Brandy...Yellow Lab, Just Diagnosed :( Questions

If you do a search for "Grain free dog food", you'll come up with lots of choices. You'd probably want to make a gradual switch, so you don't upset Brandy's tummy. Make sure you monitor the glucose...

Smile Re: Brandy...Yellow Lab, Just Diagnosed :( Questions

You may want to check your math-- each bottle is 1000 units. 100 units per ml, each bottle has 10 ml. So you know where to get cheaper insulin, and it's going to last longer than you thought. See?...

Re: Brandy...Yellow Lab, Just Diagnosed :( Questions

Hi, MadMadMom:

I'm still learning about all this myself, but I get the Type N Reli-On from Walmart for about $25.

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie had Major Seizure

Thanks for all the input. Mattie seems fine, and quite happy, considering she's pretty blind. I'll check into the glucose monitoring at home. I LOVE youtube, as there are all kinds of demonstration...

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie had Major Seizure

My vet is playing it by ear, using water consumption as a yardstick. The problem is Mattie is kind of high strung, and any activity near her causes her to drink water. If I'm gone for several hours,...

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie had Major Seizure

YIKES! Her BG was 40! So it does sound like that is what caused the seizure. I'm to slowly reduce the amount of insulin, going no lower than 10 units. I imagine changing her diet was a huge culprit...

Re: Diabetic Veterinary Diets: Which Do/Have You Used?

I recently began feeding Mattie "Taste of the Wild" made with Bison and venison. No grain, so I'm curious to see Matties BG level today. Even with close to the maximum dose of insulin, her level was...

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie had Major Seizure

Leaving for the vet now. I talked to him earlier, and he said as she came out of it herself, it's most likely not insulin related.

Re: Anyone Up? Mattie Had Major Seizure

After I woke up, the seizure lasted a couple of minutes.
