Re: Bagel joins the group and Mommy is melting

Sounds like she couldn't have kept the Lysodren down. Which is a good thing if she isn't well.

Just on the off chance that she has low cortisol (I really doubt it is that but it is possible)...

Re: Bagel joins the group and Mommy is melting

The advice usually given here is to give 1/4 of the normal insulin dose if the dog isn't eating. Check her BG first though!

It is just possible that her cortisol has gone very low and if this is...

Re: Questions about dog newly diagnosed, from Australia

Was it definitely Supralorin that your vet looked into or the older drug Ovarid? Ovarid (which is a progesterone-like steroid) would certainly mess with BG but I would be surprised if Supralorin...

Re: Questions about dog newly diagnosed, from Australia

If you are unable to get her stable enough to spay (and you almost certainly won't get anything like stability/regulation until this heat is over) there is one other option available here in...

Re: Jack the project!

Zac can completely relate to the narrow car doors -v- tailgate problem. Zac and Jack have way too much in common! Unfortunately we don't have tailgate any more so he (and I) are going to have to...

Re: Jack the project!

Could you put him in a crate in the back of your SUV with a large sort of booster mattress so he could see out while lying down? I suppose that could lead to jumping-up-and-down/getting-in-and-out...

Re: Jack the project!

I've just been looking into this methylprednisolone -v- prednisone thing. Everything seems to come up saying they are effectively the same thing in most cases. I think I remember reading somewhere...

Re: Jack the project!

I've never heard of methyl-pred having less side effects in the PU/PD(?????). You'd think that if that was the case it would be prescribed all the time in preference to prednisone.

Is some sort...

Re: Jack: bad back and anxiety issues

Pip at K9C who has severe pain issue due to really bad hips apparently responded really well to treatment with a TENS machine. Although I've found it excellent on myself I was a bit surprised to...

Re: 9 Yr Old Silly Lab - REPOSTED HERE

Has he always had this really voracious appetite - "breaking and entering" to gorge on food? Or is this something that has only been happening in the last year to two?

Re: newbie needs some input

I believe NPH can be diluted - maybe this is a situation where this could be warranted.

Re: Switching from Vetsulin to NPH

I share your concerns about what is in effect not treating the diabetes for two days - this could result in diabetic ketoacidosis which can be fatal or at least very unpleasant for the dog and...

Re: Making Your Own Treats

I've been making my own treats for quite a while. I dehydrate lean meats. To date I've used beef heart, lamb's liver, chicken liver and (best of all) chicken breast.

What I do is freeze the...

Re: Fireworks

I can totally sympathize with fireworks phobia thing. Our Zac is ok-ish with thunderstorms (due to some good early conditioning I did, I think) but is totally unhinged by even very distant fireworks...

I wouldn't wait on the x-ray either. I wonder if the vet is trying to save you money by trying something cheaper (but not as conclusive or as good - in fact something that almost certainly won't...

Re: Calcium Oxalate Crystals

It is my understanding too that the special diets are aimed at struvite stones - that is struvite stones can be actively dissolved by changing the chemistry of urine via diet. As far as I know the...

Re: Cysto or not?

If I were in your position I'd go for some sort of imaging - probably ultrasound. It really does sound like there could be something like a bladder stone in there which would explain the continuing...

Re: Hemolyzed blood in urine

Sounds like it could be a bladder stone causing an obstruction.

Good luck at the vets in the morning - it sounds like they may need to get a urine sample direct from her bladder or even drain...

Re: Home Cooking/ Raw food

Just to hi-jack this thread a little bit (sorry) - it is odd that raw is presented as a source of salmonella and other nasty bugs (which could well be true - all raw meat needs careful handling,...

Re: Home Cooking/ Raw food

Hi Allison,

You may find that your vet has the screaming habdabs re feeding raw. While some vets favor raw (my vet sells it), some are totally horrified by the idea - particularly with a dog who...
