  • Re: Help! Need diet advice!

Thank you so much Raysaint for the advice. I may need to go back onto the kangaroo if I can't find a better food and I'm running out of time because his allergies are getting worse by the day.

The vet nutritionist recommended the anallergenic royal canin but their first ingredient is corn starch and mochi is super allergic to corn...
Mochi is a 11 year old Pomeranian. Weighing 11-12 lbs
    Diagnosed with diabetes February 2016
    Had cataract surgery June 2016.
    On 5 units of HumilinN

I just did a quick check on cornstarch and it does not contain the corn protein that Mochi is probably allergic to. You might try the Royal Canin and see what happens. If I am way off base, someone please correct my information.

        • Question regarding cataract surgery

Hi everyone, hope you're all doing well.

I lost my non diabetic dog last Friday and is still going through a long process of grieving...

I've noticed that Mochi's lens seem a little blurrier outside in the day light. I don't really remember how they were suppose to look like. I also havent gone to see the eye specialist for almost 2 years...
For those that have done cataract surgery for your dogs did you guys notice any differences and how often do you bring them back in for a eye check up?

          Thank you

Sorry about the loss of your non diabetic dog.

My Lily had successful cataract surgery about five years ago and the difference in her sight was immediate. She goes back every six months for an eye exam and I give her non steroid eye drops every day.

I feel like after cataract surgery for mochi his eyesight isnt the greatest although he can see. But I'm a little worried because he hasn't gone back for a check up in almost 2 years.

His lenses seem clear inside the house but when I see them up close out in the day light it seems a bit blurry.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog.

Before Snickers became diabetic she lost much of her vision to the hardening of her lenses. I did not really notice it until the vet pointed it out. I guess it's pretty common as dogs age.
Snickers was an 18 year old Skye terrier mix. - Diagnosed 12-1-15. Angel status 4-21-19. She was a once in a lifetime dog that will always be in my heart.

                • Who's dog here has recieved cataract surgery? If so please help!

                  Hi everyone,

For those of you that have dogs that has gone through cataract surgery...did they ever have cataracts form again under their lenses?
Mochi's got some cloudiness going on and it's been 3 years since he's got his cataract surgery.
I've been a terrible owner because I've been focusing on my other dog that just passed away and forgot to bring him back for his check up.

I'm just really worried that he may have something going on in his eye..my vet said it looks cloudy and he may have cataracts forming again..but I was told that they won't ever get cataracts again after the surgery.

My Lily had successful cataract surgery in 2014 and her eye sight is still good.

Her opthalmologist said that cataracts will not form again.

In 2017 she was diagnosed with Corneal Lipid Degeneration during one of her opthalmologist visits. This is exhibited as slight cloudiness in her eyes. Her opthalmologist says that it will not effect her vision and is common in diabetic dogs, even after cataract surgery.

                    • Mochi has damaged his eye...worried

                      Hi...

I brought mochi into the eye specialist today and his eye was damaged either by running into the rose bush or scratching it on something..

We have to do aggressive treatment right now by giving him 5 different types of eyedrops and antibiotics every hour... and an oral medication that is metacam
                      1.tobrex
                      2.cefazolin
                      3.a serum drop
                      4.atrophine
                      5.azopt

I am very worried for his eye and for his blood sugar. I haven't checked it yet because I know It will be higher since he is in pain with an infected eye that is damaged. Can anyone give me any pointers or tips if you've been through this? Will this cause a lot of problems to his blood sugar and health?

Cataracts wouldn’t happen again because they are in the lens, but other problems can occur.

I think it depends on the dog. I would just test and make adjustments if blood sugar spikes.

My vet is always against me changing the dosage of insulin. He tells me to stick with his dose...

I'm not sure if I should tamper with the dosage.
I'm monitoring the amount of water he is drinking and it seems to be pretty ok right now. However he drinks a lot more than usual in the morning.

Has anyone ever used this many different types of medication before??

Being that the meds are temporary, you might want to just stay the course for insulin and food. The meds can affect blood sugar differently every day, so trying to adjust and correct might be crazy. Too unpredictable I expect.
