Congratulations! You've really been on top of his care. He is a doll. Most of us who are/were more active on this forum had dogs who "didn't read the manual"

hey everyone, haven't been on in a while, I miss it, hope you all are doing well, and well with your pups.
For a few weeks Riley's sugar has been high in the mornings. That usually happens with a new vial, seems to cause rebounds overnite. However, it carried on for 3 weeks, then as the vial got old, sugar improved, with a pinch extra insulin in his supper dose.
He may just need a slight increase.
But, he seems to sometimes struggle with stairs, but still jumps on the couch, long walks, etc.
Could his run of high sugars have caused weakness in his hind end? And what is that specific B12 that dogs get.

Dogs usually have to have sustained high blood sugar for a while to suffer from neuropathy. BUT, if they are having issues with nerve transmission across the spine already, moderately high blood sugar can lead to neuropathy as well.
Do you have access to a veterinary neurologist?
They are the BEST route for sorting out these kinds of issues. GP vets generally have limited knowledge of precise tests and responses used to diagnose neuropathy and other nerve issues.
At one point, Chris had what looked like vestibular disorder. An exceptionally good vet tested him in person (can't be done over the phone) and some symptoms fit vestibular, some didn't, so he sent us to a neurologist. It cleared up within a few hours and the neurologist believed it was a transient clot.
Veterinary neurologists use specific sets of tests to determine where the weakness is coming from.
Could be it's arthritis. Certainly worth testing his proprioception - that's a basic test related to identifying neuropathy. Has to be done correctly.
the leg thing cleared up. Things were good until December then his fastings started to be a bit higher. Proceeded to get worse and Up to now it hasn't improved; so 3 months of poor control and a weird curve pattern sometimes. High when he should be low, things like that. Just had blood and urine one, all clear.
Did an overnite curve last nite, not good. He had a good supper fasting to start, went up a few points as normal after eating, but stayed high.
Yesterday his morning fast was high, slightly increased his dose, and all was good by supper time.
Seems like a dose increase is in order, but he can have good sugar around nadir time, and before supper, but not overnite. I am puzzled.
UPDATE: I'm thinking gum disease; his back teeth are brown, his breath has been getting worse, slight jaw chatter lately. And we know periodontal disease causes insulin resistance. Only problem now is to increase his dose to try and stabilize his sugar to reduce anesthesia risk, if needed. He's almost 12, 5 years diabetic already, but I'll let the dental specialist weigh the risks.

My 90 year old mom had dental work done and she took it hard and passed a month later . Now I can't say that was the reason for her passing but it may show how any procedure is hard on the elderly . I think bloodsugar can gain adequate control in most situations . Of course that maybe straying away from the 12/12 routine . You can post some recent curves and combination of numbers you are getting.
