To answer a few of your questions and to offer a suggestion....
Not sure what you mean by AST strips, but the only ones that will work with your Glucopet are the Glucopet strips.
My suggestion would be to switch to a human meter where the strips are much more reasonably priced...there is no point in having what is considered an animal validated meter, the Glucopet, just so it can sit on a shelf.
With a human meter and being able to buy the test strips you will then be doing what your initial intentions were...to monitor by blood testing.
Ketones should always be monitored by using Ketostix which can be purchased at any pharmacy. Anything more than trace can require emergency vet care...ketones can appear when their glucose levels run high.
