Hi everyone! And, thank you Natalie for inviting me here and telling me about this site! Maggie and I are new to this, although I did have a diabetic cat. Here we go again!
After a rough start, and alot of help (hi Dolly!) we have settled with 7u of Vetsulin twice a day, at 6:30ish in the a.m. and p.m. (the 'ish' accounts for my 1/2 hour blip either way which inevitably will occur).
We left the vet from "h e -- --" (who didn't bother or care enough to show up for our appointment to get started on insulin) and settled with a new vet (who squeezed us right in).
I feed Maggie Canine W/D (she loves the canned kind, but my pocket book probably won't; but, for now we're sticking with what she will eat). I home test her. I learned that with my diabetic cat, "Cat", and wouldn't think of giving her a shot without knowing the number I was shooting at. So far her numbers have been as follows:
1/31 -- 5:30 p.m. preshot = 538 Gave 6u (don't ask).
8:15 p.m. = 484 Gave 3u (don't ask; screwed up thinking I could follow "Cat" guidelines).
9:45 p.m. = 464.
2/1 -- 7:00 a.m. = 361 (did not give a shot because I screwed up her insulin (nervous mommy) the night before
4:50 p.m. preshot = 351 (gave 7u; back on track!)
2/2 6:40 a.m. preshot = 328 (gave 7u)
More information about Maggie: She's a rescue I've had since August of 2001. In her prior life, she was beaten with sticks and burned with cigarettes. She's a sweetie and I can't imagine my life without her! I plan on keeping her around as long as possible, as long as she is happy and able to enjoy her life. She is a little bit dog aggressive and snaps at kids who move fast, so fortunately, I don't have any little ones or other dogs. She does, however, LOVE kitties! I have two and one is literally her best buddy!
Age: About 8
Weight: 54 pounds
Breed: No clue; maybe shepherd, boxer, husky, collie.....mix. Will try to attach a pic as soon as I learn how.
Insulin: Vetsulin, 7u twice a day (vet prescribed 12 once a day)
Food: W/D (canned/dry whatever works)
Treats: T/D nuggets.
Hopefully, my baby girl will continue to do down. I have some questions:
1. My vet said normal BG is 70-140; is this accurate?
2. What if Maggie tests at 150-200 (that was the point I didn't give Cat a shot) What is the guideline with dogs?
3. How much W/D canned would you feed each sitting to a 54 pound dog? The website (Hills) indicates an amount for different weights, but Maggie's 54 pounds isn't included.
4. Does anyone know a cheap place online to get the W/D?
I appreciate any advice and help offered! I'm over my initial panic, but want to do what is best for my baby!
Thanks!!
