  • Hello, new to the world of canine diabetes.

    Hello,

Three days ago my sick dog was diagnosed as being diabetic, and also as having Cushing disease. His liver is enlarged and we are having an ultrasound scan done on Tuesday.

Today is his second day on insulin. He is a jack Russell cross (he is a medium sized dog) and weighs 16kg. He is not overweight, if anything slightly underweight from being so poorly recently.

Our vet has told us to feed him twice a day a 125g of Royal Canin diabetic food. We feed him this at 7 am and at 7pm, and he has his insulin straight after each meal which is 5 units each time.

I'm just trying to learn about diabetes and see what I can do to help him.

Any advice would be appreciated. He is still in the always hungry phase, the poor love.

His insulin dose seems a bit low as a starting point. It's usually a half unit per kg, which would make it 8 units.
How did your vet determine dosage?
Riley, 8 yr. old maltipoo, 25 lbs., diagnosed Feb 2017, taking thyroid meds, had pancreatitis and DKA mid March, eating Wellness Senior formula can food. NPH dosage now at 9.0 units Humulin N. Adding either pumpkin, spinach, blueberries, yams, or green beans to his food. Also omega-3 oil.

      Hi and welcome

You may want to sign up on our sister site K9 cushings as you can get a false positive from an unregulated diabetic . They can help with that If this is a recent diagnosis

We have seen dogs that have been diagnosed with both Usually they had the cushings first and diabetes came along later . There maybe a correlation of the 2 diseases Maybe the higher cortisol level may contribute to getting diabetes

Regulation is made more complicated with a diagnosis of cushings ( want to be positive that diagnosis is correct ) Definitely recommend testing blood sugar at home
Jesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .
