  • Who took their dog to a specialist? Advice?

Does anyone maybe have tips for getting them at a reduced cost? It's crazy paying $50 for 50 strips when you do those curves. That's a buck a piece, and they go so quickly! My maltese is a newly diagnosed diabetic, about 4 months, and we're still frequently adjusting and checking her sugars. I usually buy them on amazon, wasn't able to find anything cheaper.

Diabetes and Blindness! Did your dog go blind?!

Hi all. My 8yo maltese has been diagnosed with diabetes in July. I know that many dogs go blind within the first year, so I'm pretty sad about that happening, I keep feeling like i'm seeing something change in her eyes. Did your diabetic dog go blind? If so how long did it take?
If not, are you doing anything to help with it, other than trying to control the sugars? Do you give any sort of supplements/eye drops? Ive been giving daisy the Ocu-glo supplements, but they're pricey! And i'm not sure how much they're really doing.

Re: Diabetes and Blindness! Did your dog go blind?!

      Hi and welcome

Not all dogs go blind my jesse has kept her sight in over 9.5 years being diabetic . We have gone very different directions than most and one of them was a homemade diet (non processed ) Infused with veggies . Now i cant say our methods help or make a difference . Her blood sugar has had its ups and downs and was very high in the beginning . I always wondered if there was a diet component to loss of sight ? Its very hard to draw any conclusion with jesse . All I know is she has lived many more years with diabetes than not .

Must remember dogs sight is not that great to begin with . The other senses are more pronounced. So if a dog looses sight for the most its not a big deal but the caretaker should help with the transition and they can live happy dogs lives

That's great to hear! How are you feeding Jesse vegetables though with diabetes, doesn't it make the sugars harder to control?

yea I know what they're smell is pretty incredible, but I think their eyes are still really important to them. It would be so sad to see her bump into things and be lost, that would be heartbreaking!

Re: Alphatrak test strips? where do you buy them?

From what I know, that's a pretty good price. Here in Canada, my vet charges $120.00 for 50, I refused to pay it so they reduced it to $80.00.

My maltipoo was diagnosed Feb. 2017, and so far so good. Has a small cataract in one eye that is stable.

I add foods that are high in betacarotene and other good eye nutrients. Sweet potato, wild blueberries, green beans, pumpkin.

I only add about a tablespoon of 2 of those at each meal. Breakfast he gets sweet potato or pumpkin, and a tblsp. of his pinto beans/oatmeal (for extra fibre.) Supper he gets blueberries and beans/oatmeal.
He's regulated accounting for that in his diet.

Re: Diabetes and Blindness! Did your dog go blind?!

The vegies could amount to 50 percent of her meal as it is completely homemade and Human grade

Her sugars are adequate but with diabetes its up and down. For the most part her regulation is from 100 to 250 for the day . We have had better and sometimes not so much

If you want to add some foods like raysaint to your dogs commercial diet I dont think it will affect the sugar in any noticeable way

There are supplements which provide direct vitamins to help but like anything we dont know if it truly helps but I think it cant hurt to at least try some things

You cant reverse the process to a damaged lens unless you decide to go with cataract surgery Which does have risks . The only thing you can hope for is to slow the process down if cataracts have formed and we have nothing definitive on how to do that . You can try some things and if it doesn't affect blood sugar in a major way and it does no harm it maybe worth trying

Are you testing sugar and how is your dogs regulation which is important to controlling cataracts ?

Re: Alphatrak test strips? where do you buy them?

I buy them on either Amazon or Chewy but they are $50 for 50 strips. I also buy the Bayer Keto Diastix Urine strips and I test him throughout the day with both. It really helps to stretch out the test strips for a couple months at least. I always felt really bad poking him so many times per day especially if I did a curve for a few weeks I kind of knew his pattern so I use the test strips just tosee if he was high or low in general. I would use the test strips at key times in the day like first time in the morning maybe later afternoon and right before his meal.

I don't know where you live but I live in Michigan and I go to CVS pharmacy all the time and when I get a 40% off coupon I can use them for the strips. It has saved me a lot of money.

Many do use a human meter like Yukies mom in conjunction with the pet meter

I have used a discount human meter for all of jesses diabetic life and took the number's as is . Never used a pet meter as it would have restricted me during regulation because of cost

She has not shown any diabetic symptoms since she was regulated so I would think were mostly in a good range on the human meter

You test your dogs sugar daily? that seems a bit excessive no?

were the numbers pretty similar on human and pet? I hear the human strips are just as expensive though

Please help me regular her sugar??

Hi guys. Those of you who have had a lot more experience regulating sugars, maybe you can help us. I have an 8 yo Maltese Daisy who was diagnosed with Diabetes after a DKA episode in July. Her sugars have been fluctuating ever since, even though we keep her on a consistent diet. We're currently feeding her Ketona Chicken, and also the Orijen. They both seem to be the highest in protein, and low carb. She also has a concurrent Cushings, or possibly, now we're not so sure as her blood test came back low and the vet is suggesting to take her off of the lowest dose she was on.

Anyway, for a while there it seemed like she was well regulated on 6 units NPH Novolin. The sugars went from 300s to 100's back to 300's. Until on one curve her low seemed a bit too low, 59! I retested again next day at the peak and it was 60's or 70's. The vet recommended to go down a unit. After she was on 5 units for about 2 weeks, we redid the curve, and its so high again! 500's at the high, and 300's at the lowest! Surely one unit couldn't make such a change. But what is it?! What else can it be? We thought maybe a uti but that came back negative. Getting to our wits end with it because even the vet seems out of ideas help!

I normally test before every shot . the reason for this is if her numbers are low I can adjust the dose lower if needed . There have been times she has been quite low over her diabetic life

I get jesses strips off ebay for about $5 for 50 strips . I buy in bulk and will buy 600 strips at one time

Usually purchase twice a year and buy in the fall and the spring
