That pesky Piper! Sneaking out to party in the neighborhood. At least, nothing horrible happened.
Maggie - 15 1/2 y/o JRT diagnosed 9/2007, Angel status on 6/20/16. Her mantra was never give up but her body couldn't keep up with her spirit. Someday, baby.......

I'm glad nothing happened! I usually wasn't too worried about her roaming some when she was younger. There's a few dogs that pretty much run freely around the neighborhood and nobody really messes with them. Now that she's older, and her sight and hearing aren't nearly as good as they used to be, I worry more about her not being able to cross the street safely by herself. I also don't think Dakota would go anywhere without her, so if something happened to her, I'm not sure Dakota would make it home on his own.
She has always been very smart. I remember training her when she was younger. She would pick up new commands so quickly, she'd usually get bored and walk away to do her own thing (even if I still had treats!) if I didn't move on to something else.
I'm not sure if it's related to the eye infection, but the last four days, she's been about mid-300s at her morning fasting and super high (high-600s to off the meter ) at night. I don't know why she would only be so high at PM fasting though. Seems weird. At first, I thought it may be related to the eye drops, but this pattern started the day before I took her to the vet and got the ok to start the drops.
It could be, Patty. I didn't think of it this way yesterday... When I had an eye infection, the light really hurt my eye, and I had to wear sunglasses until it was cleared up. It could be that the pain from being out in the sun is causing her to use up her insulin more and go higher. Her eye looks a little better, but I don't think I'm seeing the amount of improvement I should be. I think I'm going to have to go pick up the Prednisolone drops on Monday.
Her eye finally was looking much better after I got home from work yesterday! I don't think I will need the Prednisolone drops, just a longer course than usual of the Neo-Poly-Dex. BG's still pretty high, but was down to 600s tonight, instead of the 700s I've been seeing at her PM fasting. I know it's not a huge difference in the higher range, but hopefully the downward trend will continue.
I was planning on doing a curve in the next few days, but now the infection is muddying her numbers up, so it looks like that might have to wait...
It looks like Piper's BG is starting to come down, and this morning, I screwed it up. I did a fur shot this morning. I was sure the needle was in (even felt for it), but apparently it wasn't. I think it went in, and came back out at the tip or something. She had a huge wet spot on her fur. I didn't give any more insulin then, even though I was about 95% sure none got in. I went back to bed, and ended up sleeping longer than usual (until 11:30!). When I woke up, found that Piper had peed all over my bathroom. I cleaned that up, went into the kitchen and found that she drank an entire bowl of water. I sat down to test her and thought I saw drops of water unusually far from the water bowl... yeah, not water. She peed in the kitchen too, and had been walking through it to get to the water bowl. I tested her BG and it just read HI. I gave her 5 units of R (her next shot is at 6 pm), and put the dogs outside to clean up the kitchen. I still need to give her a bath. I think she peed in her sleep in the kitchen. So, I'm having a fun start to my day so far...
BTW, it does seem to help to sing or hum while I give her shot. She has started to be very good for her shots again.
Her PM shot went fine. She seemed to feel better after I gave her the R earlier, but still read at 540 at fasting. I'm hoping we can get back on track now!
Her eye is still a bit red. It seems to be slowly improving, but I'm still wondering if I should call the vet and ask about switching drops. I've never had to give the Neo-Poly-Dex this long before. The Prednisolone is going to be really expensive, but one of my coworkers (who used to be a vet tech) suggested asking if we could try just Dexamethasone drops. She said her dog didn't do well on the combination drops, but when she switched to only Dex, it worked. She also said the Dex drops were only about $20-30, which is way better than $140!
you can use the r every 6 hours if piper is elevated
i did that with jesse when she ran high .
eyes and diabetes . my jesse seems to be on the mend from a bought of horners .
hope piper is beginning to turn that corner

Yes, it is good to have the R. I'm glad I did yesterday! I have switched her to a custom mix of R & N insulins, so she does normally get 5 units of R at both shots. My vet asked how she was doing on the 70/30 last week, so I finally had to tell her that I switched from it to my own mix. She seemed okay with it.
Her eye looks MUCH better today than it did yesterday! It isn't red anymore! I'm going to do a couple more days of drops just to be sure it's gone.
On Wednesday, her eye was looking great. There was just a little bit of white goop in her eye. I continued the drops on Thursday and on Thursday, her eye started to look a little red again, and her BG is starting to go sky high. I decided not to do the drops today, because of her BG, but her eye still looks a little red. No goop. I think maybe the steroid in the drops is causing her BG to keep rising, so I don't want to switch to the drops that are just steroid. I tried to call the vet, but mine won't be back until Monday. I'm not sure what to do. The receptionist told me to keep on doing the drops, but I think the drops could be part of the problem. :-/
I talked to my boss's husband (who is a human doctor). He said to try to do the Neo-Poly-Dex drops only at night for now. He also doesn't think that switching to just steroid would be a good idea at this point. I'm only assuming the steroid in the Neo-Poly-Dex is what is making her BG shoot up. I guess if I go to once a day, and her BG shows improvement, then that's the problem.
She also decided to go an adventure today. My dad had put a clip on the latch of the gate so that she couldn't open it that way. She found another way. She somehow pulled the stake out of the other side and pushed through the gate. Dad said both dogs were all wet and muddy when he got home. Now we have to figure out how to keep her from opening it that way...
I don't want to speak too soon, but it does look like her BG is doing better with just once a day eye drops. Her eye is still slightly red. You can tell the difference when you compare it to her right eye. Hopefully the vet will call back tomorrow morning, and we can figure out something for her that isn't a steroid.
