Hello everybody! I'm a newbie to this board but not to diabetes. My little Ladybug was diagnosed with diabetes in October 2008. Within three months she was very well regulated on Vetsulin, starting at 7 units twice a day and gradually cut down to 4-1/2 units twice a day bu September 2009. At the beginning of September 2009, she had her six-month test - fructosamine and complete blood panel. Everything was perfect with her glucose level being 126. While I was at the vets in for that visit, I purchased her a new vial of Vetsulin. In mid-October, at the same 4-1/2 units twice a day, she suddenly started showing glucose in her urine, just a small amount at 1/4%. Well, I thought maybe I shook the vial instead of rolling it in my hand so I purchased a new vial. A month later, mid-November, on the new vial, her urine glucose slowing rose to 1/2% so I called the vet. He didn't seem too concerned and said that sometimes glucose can get into to the urine and that I shouldn't worry.
During the week between Christmas and New Years, her urine glucose was up to between 1% and 2%. I called the vet and she went in on Tuesday, the 12th of January for her fructosamine and complete blood panel. Between mid-December and January 12th, she lost 7 lbs. On January 12th, her mid-day was 295 and her fructosamine level was at 625. Her blood panel was absolutely perfect. THEN, he told me of the problems with Vetsulin and the inconsistencies and immediately put Ladybug on Humulin N at 3 units twice a day to start.
My question is, I know that I am starting all over again trying to get her regulated but how many weeks before I can see an improvement, such as no glucose in her urine and her gaining some weight back. Do you think that the Vetsulin has done her any permanent damage? Will she have any problems adjusting to the Humulin? I have to take her in every Thursday for a midday check and to be weighed.
I can't understand why the FDA didn't recall the Vetsulin instead of just issuing a warning.
Thanks for any and all help!
