Glad Sable is doing well - Great bug story - should video tape that & send it to America's Funniest Home Videos!

It's nice to see you here Eric and to know that Sable is cruising along. How have you been doing?

Default It's been a while- getting insulin

Hey all,

Sable is still doing fine, I have been so busy- took Sable with on a work trip across the country and she is great.

Her numbers aren't always perfect but I have learned to live with it, for the most part she is very good and she is happy- I think that's about all I can ask.

My problem, my vet....

Here goes... Sable is diabetic, she needs insulin- I was traveling so I had the Heartworm test and Lyme's shot done before I came home, I am starting to run low on insulin but of course the prescription is up. I called the vet explained on how I had the shots done elsewhere and need more insulin yet they still need to see Sable... for what I don't know, I don't need blood work done (she is diabetic and that is not going to change), I test her for her numbers and if I seen anything troubling I obviously would take her in. She is up to date on shots etc. So I guess they need to see her before they can give a prescription, is this something they HAVE to do before giving out prescriptions? I'm just curious if that is the case but even so I just can't believe it will cost me $50-60 just to get a prescription for them to do nothing. Thanks for you help, I know this forum will have answers as I think i'll be looking for a new vet (this one is expensive anyway and I always seem to have some sort of problem getting insulin it seems).

Eric,
I don't remember, where do you get your insulin? I don't believe NPH requires a prescription in MI. Although the stores/pharmacies sometimes have different policies.

Most human and animal doctors are required to have seen the patient within a year in order to write a prescription.

So glad to hear Sable is doing well! And she enjoyed her trip with you

Patty

Another thought is to call the vet where you had the test/shot done and see if he will mail you a script if your pharmacy requires it. I don't believe it matters where you have it filled but you could ask the pharmacy to be sure.

I am in Michigan but no one will give the NPH without a prescription, same with the needles. I will have to take her then, just seems like a waste of money... I think I'll take her to a vet in Wisconsin though as this vet is expensive and i'm almost positive that my uncle did not have to take his dog (that was diabetic) every year to get insulin (but I am probably wrong). Wish I would have knew about this when I had her stuff done on my trip, I could call down and see if they would do it though I suppose...

Thanks for the response. (still can't get over having to take her in and have them do nothing just to get a prescription though)

We've talked about this before, but here is a link that MAY give correct info about state laws. Of course, each pharmacy can have their own rules.

It might be worth a short drive across a state line to buy $25 NPH at Walmart, if you are using NPH.

I'm in Michigan's eastern U P and no one has ever asked me for a prescription to buy insulin. Pat

I THINK a requirement that a vet see an animal before giving a prescription is probably quite universal. Sorry you can't get NPH without a prescription in Michigan. Maybe going to Wisconsin is a good idea.

Cheering you on, while standing by helplessly! but delighted to see you again!

Love and hugs, licks and wags,
