Default Echo

I have been looking around for potential new dogs for a while. I even visited the shelters a few times, but wasn't able to adopt yet. On Tuesday, I went around to the shelters again. This is Echo.

I brought her home on the shelter's "sleepover" (temporary foster) program, and I'm going to go on Tuesday to officially adopt her. The shelter lists her as a 2 yr old Plott Hound mix, but I think she's probably younger and a Smooth Collie mix. She knows some commands already, but she does need more training. She is already pretty attached to me and she gets along well with Dakota. She's going to keep me busy, and that's probably a good thing.

Aww Mandy, she's beautiful! She looks like she has about 6 breeds mixed in there. I love it that she is already attached to you and Dakota must be cautiously thrilled.

Here's to many years of young healthiness.

I went and officially adopted the little monster yesterday, and she has her first vet appointment tomorrow.

We took her hiking at the state park last week. She got tired out after a couple of miles hiking the trails. She likes playing in the shallow water at the creeks, but isn't a fan of swimming yet.

She's been coming to work with me and she plays well with both the big and small dogs. I joked that I'm going to teach her to help me herd the little dogs out and put them back in their rooms.

Most importantly, she gets Dakota up and moving more. They actually do play together sometimes!

I have ordered a crate for her. I've never crate trained before, so I'm a little nervous about that, but she is still in a chewing phase (one reason I think she's younger than 2), and I don't want her getting into anything that could hurt her (she'll pick things off the counters too :-/). Last night, I don't think she got into anything she wasn't supposed to, but she did "kill" a turtle toy this morning.

I'm thinking about doing the DNA test thing to see what mix she is. I think there's probably Smooth Collie. My boss and her sister both separately said Smooth Collie/Catahoula. My dad thinks she looks like she has a Fox Terrier head. A few people have suggested Pit (I think because of the brindle coloring), but I don't see it. I think if she actually does have Plott Hound in the mix (like the shelter said), it's probably not much. It would be interesting to see what a DNA test says.

Oh my goodness, she is beautiful!! I completely agree with your boss and her sister. I totally see those smooth collie and catahoula leopard dog features (i think the brindle came from the catahoula)!! That's just awesome that she's fitting right in, and getting Dakota in a playful mood!! Super cute pictures, by they way

Congratulations to you and Echo for finding eachother!!! I'm so happy for you all!!

Awesome pictures!!!! What a great treat for all of you! Everyone wins!!!

We thought doing the DNA test was quite fun! If you want, you can send me a private message with your email address and I can send you Karl's DNA report - it's very complete and just really neat to have! We did the blood test DNA (vs. the cotton swab) so they can then test the genetic markers for disease predisposition based on the breeds found. Quite interesting!
