Natalie,
I couldn't express my thoughts any more eloquently than Kevin just did. Katie was blessed to have you. I'm so sorry. 18 years together is a beautifully long time and I know her absence must leave a huge hole in your heart.
Thinking of you and Jeff.
Patty

Natalie,
I'm so sorry to read of Katie's passing. She was quite a trooper and was fortunate to live nearly 18 years with such a wonderful family. Thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind and comforting words. Yesterday was really a long hard day, starting at the ER vet at 1am and ending with Katie's passing about 1pm and the aftermath of exhaustion and sadness that followed.

Poor little girl... she had developed some neurological type symptoms a few months ago, was having trouble getting her back legs under her to stand and they kept folding up under her. But she otherwise seemed okay. It was hard to know how much was her bad hips and how much might be a neuro issue.

A week ago Tuesday, after a few really encouraging days where she seemed better, the back leg problem got abruptly worse and she was having a lot of trouble walking. But was still eating, drinking, and harassing the dog. She did sometimes get stuck somewhere on slippery surfaces where she just couldn't get up onto her back legs and kind of flopped over. She was also... surly, irritable. Just not right.

Tuesday night I gave her the usual meds at 11pm and she was almost immediately very agitated, panting, breathing with her mouth open, kicking her legs... I waited an hour or so and she wouldn't settle, wouldn't sleep. So we decided to take her to the ER. She seemed a little better while we were there but she had ongoing neurological symptoms - her hind legs were hypertensed and extended. Got home about 3am.

Checked her at 7:30am and she was much worse. Out of it, not very responsive, sometimes panting and breathing with her mouth open. And sometimes she would suddenly thrash around, something the IMS later witnessed and felt it might have been some kind of a seizure. By the time I talked to the IMS she was not very responsive at all and showing a classic neurological posture.

So the crisis came on really suddenly, less than 24 hours before we let her go.
