Franklin looks like your Mum finally has the upper hand - got to admire your persistence with the wriggling and avoiding the shot but looks like those days are over.
Way to go Jane !!

YAY! Sometimes you just have to take the upper hand away from them. No choice kiddo! Great job! Hugs!

Nice moves Jane! Not always easy to stay one step ahead of these smart pups!
Holli & Decker // diagnosed November 5th, 2011 // Journeyed to the bridge January 26th, 2013, surrounded by his family at home // 9 years old // Levemir insulin // Hypothyroid // C1-C5 cervical spinal lesion // weight 87 lbs // Run with the wind my sweet boy. Run pain free. Holding you close in my heart till we meet again!
Thank you Patty, Ann, Barb, Anne Marie, Shellie, Sandy and Holli tonight took a couple of minutes- ran out of bacon and had a slice of ham as his after shot treat he really wanted the ham.
I read somewhere on the site people talking about bloodshot eyes. Bright bloodshot and the pup was high, whites of the eyes and the pup was in good bg range, and dark bloodshot the pup was low-ish. I've been checking Franklin's eyes so I can hopefully spot a pattern. His left eye can be bright bloodshot at around 19/ 342, but his right eye will be white. I'm fearing eye issues I've made an appointment with an Opthamologist to have his eyes checked out. November 28.
I also check him for"devil dog" eyes, like in photos. He seems to have full reflection at this stage, but tonight while Franklin was on my lap, his left eye seemed to be bluish in the black part. That's the pupil, right? It may have been a reflection of my tshirt, but I don't know. I'll see if I can get appt with gp this week to get them looked at, but is there anything you can suggest in the meantime?
Thank you all so much for everything
Jane and Franklin, 8 years, maltese, currently 6.4kg, Australia. Cushing's with elevated hormones dx'd 2009/2010, proteinuria, epilepsy, diabetes dx'd July 2012. Phenobarb 30mg bid, 3mg melatonin bid, lignans sid, caninsulin 4.8u bid (a work in progress). Diet- home cooked. Blind from cataracts January 2013, sighted from surgery February 2013.
The bluish tint can sometimes be nuclear or lenticular sclerosis - an aging eye progression and may actually offer some protection from cataracts because of how densely packed the layers become. Here's a good article on differentiating between cataracts and lenticular sclerosis: http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/dvm....jsp?id=201597
If you are seeing a reflection (like with camera flash) of the tapetum then cataracts aren't likely because they develop within the lens of the eye. The tapetum sits at the back of the eye and cataracts would prevent the light from shining through/reflecting back.
Still, other issues can be present and an Ophthalmology consult is always a great idea in my mind

Thanks Patty, and phew! There appears to be nothing wrong with Franklin's eyesight, as he was able to catch a mouse late last night. Thankfully it wasn't mistaken for food, and when I squealed "Eew! Spit it out, spit it out!" he did. The mouse didn't survive the encounter/taste test though.

Tara in honor of Ruby.
She was a courageous Boston Terrier who marched right on through diabetes, megaesophagus, and EPI until 14.
Lucky for both of us we found each other. I'd do it all again girly.
Oh mice are fun interactive toys!! At least that's what Ali used to tell me when we lived up in Maine. They'd find their way into the heated garage and Ali would try to catch one and play with it outside. Yuck...

Oh..yummy. My last pup would steal them from the cats who would catch them outside and bring them in. I was unlucky enough to always get ones that were only half alive rather than dead. So then we'd spend the night watching over the poor little thing til it died or I'd take it to the vet to be put down. Least it shows he's feeling good!
And no, Franklin...Auntie Shell is NOT going to kiss you tonight! Don't want mousie cooties, thankyewverymuch! LOL

Hi Jane,
Read your whole thread last night and finally managed to see your boy on video this am. You are doing so so well, that inject ease is amazing, he barely noticed it.
I want to learn to post videos too! Pictures are still a struggle for me!
Franklin is georgous, a real superstar! Hope all continues well. Looks like you are getting to his magic number of insulin too. Great idea to get his eyes checked by an opthamologist. I too worry ridiculosly about my pippas eyes and was told by my vet she has early age related changes, which some on here have suggested MAY offer protection from the much feared cataracts. I have put pippa on some eye supplements as an insurance policy for me to feel better if / when it does happen. I have not noticed any bloodshottiness in Pippa.
That poor mouse, made me laugh though as I woke up to dead mouse by my bed last week and have no idea which of my 2 cats or dogs was the assasin, but they were all looking pleased with themselves
Pippa; Westie, diagnosed 17th April 2012 at 6.5 years old, 8.7kgs, 6.8 units canninsulin bd, Burns high oats food . Lives with George 9 (Black lab), Polly 19 (cat) and Basil 15 (diabetic mog for 5+ years). Im Jen and we live in West Wales where it rains too much!
Thank you for asking about Franklin, he's doing good and thankfully hasn't found another mouse to play with The inject ease is still working for us. We've still used the sink depending on which side of him I'm injecting into, and now we've progressed to him sitting on my lap and I can inject him then.
In our olden days (2 weeks ago) I needed his head in front of me or to my left because I wasn't co ordinated enough to get him if he was in any other position. With the inject ease I can inject anywhere from his scruff to all the way down to just in front of his thigh. And I can even inject him left handed, there's just no stopping us now! Oh, the relief, the struggling, wrestling and my trepidation is over Franklin can still squirm and wriggle on occasion, but even so, it's SOO much easier. Jenny, you have my eternal gratitude for telling me about it, thank you very much ♥
Hi Jenny,
Thank you so much for your very kind words and encouragement. Franklin has had a change of food and is loving it, and was having some great fasting numbers, so after almost a week on the new food, I did a curve on Saturday. I'd spilled Thursday night's shot and his Saturday numbers weren't as good as I hoped.
These muppets are a worry, but completely worth it. Your Pippa is a beautiful little girl, and I'm so glad to hear that her eyes haven't deteriorated. Franklin's food is supplemented with taurine, which is good for heart and eye health.
You woke up with a mouse beside your bed? I suppose it could have been worse, if the mystery assassin had put it on your bed!! Well, they do keep us on our toes, even if it's tip toeing around the dead things on the way to grab some paper towel
Saturday's curve
Fasting 11.7/210 food and insulin
+2 15.3/275
+4 22.3/401
+6 18.4/331
+8 10.1/181

@11 hours I gave food and insulin because daylight savings was beginning and I also needed to transition him to my day shift schedule.

Any input is always welcome. Thank you all and love and hugs
