  • POLL 2016: Insulins Used by Our Dogs

It's been a while since we last polled everyone to find out what insulin(s) you are using. Now that Vetsulin has been back on the market in the U.S. for a while, it will be interesting to see if things have shifted since 2012.

You can vote more than once in this poll so if, like some, you have had more than one diabetic dog ( ) you can list both regimens.

And if your dog has passed on, as mine has, please vote with what you used last or what worked best for your dog.

Re: POLL 2016: Insulins Used by Our Dogs

I voted for NPH as working the best for jesse but there are times i have used a fast acting insulin when we lost some control with NPH for an unknown reason .

I think most of these insulins are a bit to strong for a dogs metabolism even the pet one and wish another pharmaceutical company took up the challenge to create something more appropriate

Now the saving grace for dogs is they seem to tolerate sugar above the renal threshold with little difficulty and live happy healthy lives so the control does not need to be that tight .
Jesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .
Jesse earned her wings on 6/21/2021

This poll is from August but not many votes - longer time members, if you haven't already noted which insulin you use currently, please do.

Re: POLL 2016: Insulins Used by Our Dogs

This is another good poll just in terms of seeing the variety of insulins used by dogs over the years and the number of dogs who have done well on NPH.
