    Re: schnauzer having potty accidents

a glucose curve will just show that his sugar is high

did they rule out cushings? Most vets jump to cushings too soon but the pot belly, drinking, need for more insulin are definitely some of the symptoms.

    How is his coat?

they can do a blood test that can say no it isn't cushings. The test FOR cushings just measures cortisol which can be elevated when their blood sugar is high

Any dental infections or ear infections?
Jenny: 6/6/2000 - 11/10/2014 She lived with diabetes and cushings for 3 1/2 years. She was one of a kind and we miss her.

as judi suggested a pot belly is a sign of cushings we do have a sister site k9 cushings where you can ask some questions

my jesse had a pot belly when her diabetes was uncontrolled . the reason i believe the high sugar caused liver issues

if you are seeing diabetic symptoms with high thirst and urination and you have tested for UTI its probably high sugar and it maybe very high now crushings can give similar symptoms

surprised the specialist could not answer theses simple questions and it sounds like they just did a urine test

you may have to return to a vet and ask questions about what is going on and probably needs a full blood panel and curve . now if your home testing you could do curves at home if not home testing i recommend as soon as you can . at least you can figure out what blood sugar is doing . with high sugar your dog could be showing ketones also

schnauzers are known for being problematic as far as regulation and sometimes require a large dose of insulin to regulate
Jesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .

        The specialist suggested euthanizing him??

What reason did they give for that suggestion? Did they believe he has Cushing's disease or failing kidneys or something to warrant such advice?

It would be helpful to do a curve to see what's really going on with him. Whether his blood sugar is high all the time or swinging up and down.

If it's high all the time, the first step would be to increase the insulin dose. It could be he has Cushing's disease or some other issue, such as a flare in his pancreatitis that's causing the higher blood sugar and can be compensated by raising his insulin dose.

Has bloodwork been done recently to check kidney and liver values?

          Re: schnauzer having potty accidents

DJ tested negative for Cushings. we had gone to see a specialist on 3 occasions to do abdominal scans, and addl bloodwork. one of the scans showed a mass on his pancreas. over the next two months we put him on gemfibrozil to lower his triglycerides, and i fed him strictly boiled chicken and white rice. he did great for a few weeks then apr 2017, he was acting depressed so i took him back to specialist for a recheck. i left him overnight and went to pick him up the next afternoon. when i got there the specialist said his pancreas was worse and the best course of action was to euthanize. after an hour of wailing in my car, i opted to do what was best for dj and agreed to put him to sleep. i called my mom and son and asked them to come to the vet, then asked to see dj. when the door opened, dj came trotting over to me wagging his tail, jumping around. he clearly was not ready to go. the specialist said it was the pain meds he was on and that if i took him home, he would not last overnight. my mom and son agreed, he did not seem ready, so the specialist gave me 3 syringes of pain meds and i took him home. at home he ate, drank, pooped, and peed normally, and here we are 9 months later. never had to use the pain meds. I wasnt too happy with the specialist, and our regular vet has no suggestions, so ive been trying to do research onlne. ive been looking through dr petersons blog and came across something about insulin resistence, hyperlipidemia, and glucoganoma. i'm trying to put pieces together, but really have no clue what to do. i am thankful this forum is here so i can at least make educated guess. my next step will be another glucose curve, then ask my vet to check liver and kidney values in bloodwork. thank you all for your help.

Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry that you went through that. And glad you listened to your own instincts.

With potentially numerous issues going on, regulation will be challenging. High triglycerides tend to raise blood sugar and also can make it erratic. So insulin needs could change for no apparent reason.

Mini Schnauzers are infamous for high triglycerides and I have seen many of them go through periods of months on one dose of insulin and then abruptly need significantly more or less.

I went through a similar experience with Maggie. They told me initially that she would not live six months. She proceeded to live almost 9 years just to spite them. She was challenging but once I made up my mind that I could learn everything I needed to about diabetes, we were fine.
