  • Re: Cj

Hi Anne- Marie, sorry to hear CJ hasn't been feeling well. It sure does get stressful when the diabetic dog doesn't want to eat or might throw up.
My sympathies are with you and others that need to deal with this on a regular basis.

I hope he is back to hisself soon.

Lucky for both of us we found each other. I'd do it all again girly.

I did quite a bit of reading on kidneys a bit ago, and from what I read lowering the protein is not necessarily a necessity. You may want to reduce the

        Oxalate
Some foods such as spinach, rhubarb, strawberries, nuts, beans, beets, dark leafy green vegetables, tofu, tea, chocolates and wheat bran contain large amount of the compound oxalate. This chemical can become stored in the kidney and form stones if it does not get excreted causing further damage to kidney function, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

        Phosphorus
Phosphorus is another compound that may not be properly excreted due to kidney disease and build-up in the body. It can lead to problems such as joint pain and weakness if it accumulates in the body. The foods that can be avoided to prevent this burden on the kidneys and body include milk, yogurt, cheese, liver, nuts, beans, and chocolates.

I am sure CJ would love some chocolate.... Ha!

Even though it mentions a low protein, I do not think it is necessary, until things get really bad.

Thank you ALL for your concern for little CJ. I really appreciate it.

He is finally on the mend - I did not think he would make it about 10 days ago and the vet thought that if he would not eat for a few days that maybe it was time .... so I really pulled out all the stops to get him to eat even though he was feeling bad. Cooked him fillet steak, bought him his favourite rotisserie chicken ( took fat off of course and gave him the breast meat) , fed him a little shaved ham which he loves too ( the ham for slimmers). He started to eat a little but still no dry dog food. He started to turn the corner at the weekend and ate a little dry food with the chicken/ham/steak!!

He is feeling much better and eating ( not enough but a lot more than a week ago and is in better form). I am feeding him 4-5 times a day now which seems to work. His numbers are a bit weird but in general have been ok. I am just adjusting the insulin by small amounts depending on his BG levels ,morning and evening fastings ( although not much fasting when he is getting so many meals)

He is back up to 6iu morning and 6.4 or 6.5 in the evening. It was his pancreas that had flared up again and Marlies the specialist vet that saw him last year said that it will always be hovering there under the surface - the pancreatitis- and will flare up from time to time.

The vets agreed that we will keep him on Flagyl long term but reduce the amount as he gets better. THe 4-5 meals a day are staying as he just cant cope with 2 big meals a day.

Sorry I have not been on to update but I really was so stressed about CJ this time but hes like a cat with 9 lives!! TThank you all for thinking of him - all the positive thoughts worked as he is out of the woods finally.

All the worry and stress is SO SO worth it especially when he cuddles up behind my head at night and goes to sleep there . Toffee has got a bit chubby because she was feeling left out with CJ getting all the yummy food I had to give her a little too! But now its back to the normal diet ... well he is still getting a little ham and of course chicken!

Thank you all again I promise not to leave it so long for an update again.

                  Hugs
