    Re: What happens when...

There is no cure for canine diabetes, but your dog can lead a healthy, happy normal lifespan as long as you give proper insulin and regulate the blood sugar reasonably well.

We have had many dogs here who were diagnosed at a young age and lived eight, nine, ten or more years with diabetes.

Dogs are much more tolerant of high blood sugar than humans, fortunately, and suffer few side effects, mainly cataracts. They can routinely have blood sugar in the 200s to mid-300s and be fine. Obviously, you try to get the best regulation you can, but it does NOT have to be perfect.

From our brief correspondence, I know you live outside the U.S. in an area where obtaining treatment might be difficult.

Have you started insulin with your dog?

How is your dog's blood sugar now?

Let us know where you are at and any problems you are having and we will try to help. We have had members from all over the world and I know it can be challenging in some countries to get good veterinary care. We're here to help.
