Dental cleaning questions

During the last trip to the vet, I realized Mr Shadow's teeth are in desperate need of professional cleaning. This is something we've known but put in back burner due to how expensive it is.

His teeth are dark at the gum area so I gave in and scheduled an appt. The instructions are for him to skip 2 injections (dinner & breakfast) so anesthesia works. Has anyone in the group tried this & if so, was it worth it?
