  • Angel Kobe...

Hello, I am new to this forum but have been reading many of the post and have giving me hope for my fur baby.
    Name: Kobe Jr.
    Breed: Husky/Chihuahua mix
    Weight: 40 lbs

On Sunday 11/8/2020 he was eating normal (he loves food) but we noticed he was drinking a lot of water, we have 5 fur babies and is hard to keep track when they all go drink water at the same time. For the next coupled of days he vomited just water 2 times, I called to make appointment with vet. The appointment was set for Saturday 11/14/2020 by then Kobe Jr. was eating very little and he seemed more tired and lethargic. We were told that he has diabetes and that he had DKA, he had to stay in the hospital to get his sugar level under control because it was 530. We were able to visit and he did not seem to get better, he stopped eating. The vet seemed confused as to why he wasn't eating said that all the test were fine they did an ultrasound but that he was displaying signs of pancreatitis. Monday night 11/16/2020 we took him to a critical care specialist hospital, pancreatitis was confirmed and he had to stay there a few day. After a day and half they had to feed through NG tube because he was still refusing to eat. We could not visit and the only thing we could do is wait and keep paying $$$. On Saturday we were told that he was still not interested in eating on his own but everything else was fine and they thought he would be more comfortable at home and he might eat with us. They prescribed meds for vomiting, diarrhea, antibiotics, appetite enticer and insulin (Novolin 18 units, twice a day if he ate a full meal, lower dosage to 12 units if he ate little to none). We were told to take him back if he did not eat by Monday. Saturday and Sunday he did not want to eat, I tried many different foods and nothing interest him, I blended the food to give him and it was a struggled for him to eat some and them he would vomit. We took him back Monday 11/23/2020. The situation is the same he is just not interested in food whatsoever, the sugar level is controlled, all his organs are fine, he is getting fed through the NG tube and he has not vomit, does not have diarrhea. Today I was told that he needs to stay there longer hat the only thing we could do is wait they will continue to provide different foods to see if he is willing to eat, ideally that want to release until he is eating on his own. Please help, I don't know what to do a part of me wants to take him home and take care of him and the other part wants to let him stay and wait but with no conclusive time frame I don't know how long he will go with eating.
Thank you in advance for your responses.

Re: DKA, Diabetes and Pancreatitis - Won't Eat

Welcome the the family. Sorry bout all the stuff that hit your dog in one go, it can seem overwhelming. As for the feeding part mine started having a small problem not wanting to eat for a bit but he slowly started eating again once i got him stable. It just seems my dog was in a low mood but he slowly picked back up and forced himself to eat when he was starving. The bad thing about that was we need food to go along with the insulin. I feed mine a homemade meal so it was more enticing to him im guessing because he refused to eat the kibbles and i bought like 4 different kinds. Also my dog was on alot of meds during the beginning and it seems to have caused a few nausea problems so he was actually a different dog during those times till i cut it out and he reverted back to normal so medication could be a factor. Other than that all i can say is feed him on a schedule and just get him to eat as much as possible and try not to be too distressed around him because the vibe does carry over to our pets causing more stress on both parties. Oh by the way mine didnt like eating for over a week and he slowly started eating more and more till now. Its not enough and hes screaming at me for more lol.

Re: DKA, Diabetes and Pancreatitis - Won't Eat

Thank you for the response. We picked up Kobe Jr. yesterday from the hospital because I had a feeling that staff at the hospital were not being truthful about his recovery. I was told he was stable, glucose under control and all organs good, the only problem was the eating. Kobe Jr. walked in on his own Monday that we dropped him off, he would go for short walks, now he cannot stand on his own and can only stay up no more than a minute or two. His back let is swollen and he is breathing heavy and his stomach contracts a lot when he breathes. I called the hospital and was told that they notice his breathing a little heavy a couple of hours before I picked up but that I should take him back if I am concerned. Today I gave him half his dose of insulin and he is resting but unresponsive. Any advice? I worry about the quality of life.

      Thank you.

Re: DKA, Diabetes and Pancreatitis - Won't Eat

Yeah the problem with animal hospitals is that the staff is constantly being rotated so its hard for them to be familiar and keep track of every pet on a more deep level compared to the dogs normal vet. Also it seems the time he was on high BGs caused some nerve damage in his legs this also happened to mine and he couldn't use his hind legs for around 2 months. I suggest getting him on Methyl B-12 Vitamins without artificial flavoring because the flavoring is poison to dogs i buy mine from GNC and give him 1 pill each meal. After i got him stabilized during those 2 months of not using his hind legs he began to make slow recovery. The heavy breathing was also a problem for me at the beginning and that was during his time on a lot of medications so if you could give me a list of all the medications hes on i might be able to tell you which ones might be causing his heavy breathing but this isn't a guarantee since every dog is different because my doctors didn't think it was the medication very strongly and wanted more expensive tests which they said have a chance of not giving any information anyways. Being as i was tight financially i chose to take him off some of his medications of my own gut feeling since i know my dog best and it did the trick. As far as quality of life goes it will look bad now but if you put in work and especially patience it will pay off most of the time. This is all new to you and your pet so its a lot to get use to but over time it will go back normal most likely. As for unresponsive just think of yourself with a horrible headache and the only thing you want to do is be left alone to just shut eye and rest until you slowly feel better the odds are this is what your dog is going through at the moment because he is sickly and stressed from the vet visits constantly over a short period of time. My dog use to just wake up eat a little and go right back to bed till his next meal for a good 2-3 weeks till he felt better and was willing to play in the bed with me and slowly he started getting usage in his legs again and now hes back to normal pretty much with a little bit if stumbling because he had severe nerve damage and nerves take a long time to repair the longer they are out of commission. But yeah i know its hard right but y'all can get through this PS. You can look at the thread on my dog for a more detailed journey if you have time.

Re: DKA, Diabetes and Pancreatitis - Won't Eat

Pancreatitis is a painful disease and what can happen even after its healed the dog remembers that pain and can affect appetite . Now it also takes awhile to get appetite back . My jesse went 10 days without eating and staying at hospital

Its a delicate balance of food and no food to give the pancreas a chance to heal

Also a dog cant be regulated in a few days at the vet . So you do want to get your own glucose monitoring device and take charge of the situation

I really appreciate the responses, reading other peoples situations gave me hope for my Kobe Jr. I wish I would have found this forum when he was diagnosed. Thanksgiving 2020 seemed to go on forever, Kobe Jr. got worse by the minute, he could not stand and got to the point that he can no longer drink water. He had a fever and as it turns out he had a fever when I picked him up from the hospital on Wednesday night. Kobe Jr. wanted to lay in the sofa outside but it was too cold, I held him and around 1:18a.m. on Friday he vomit a brown, odorless liquid and it was not blood, at 1:20 he gave his last breath. He spent a total of 10 days in the hospital.

Thank you for your kind words and thank you for this forum. Yes, remembering all the years of happiness our Kobe Jr. brought to our lives makes me smile. I love him and miss him so much. I have 4 other doggies 1 male (Kobe), 3 females (Chonchis, Pelusa and Momi), they are all missing Kobe Jr. as well but Kobe a bit more than the girls. My first doggy loss was in 2015, my chihuahua Princess. We lived in California and after her passing I came across aquamation, we went through that process instead of cremation and now that we live in Nevada I really wanted to do the same process with my Kobe Jr. I wish he could have been with me longer but the kindness and the respect people show for the pain of losing a fur baby helps ease the pain. Thank you again and enjoy every second you have with your fur babies.

Oh no... I am so sorry to learn that Kobe has passed. I know your heart is broken. Sending you a hug and a kiss skyward to Kobe. He was loved deeply. That in the end is the most important thing.

Thank you all, I believe we all have a mission, a path and my Kobe Jr. in his short life fulfilled his purpose, he brought so much joy to our family. As a grand finale due to his illness I became a part of this wonderful group. To know that there are so many people out there that love and care for their fur babies and help others makes me so happy. Words cannot express how thankful I am, God Bless each and everyone of you.
