From other threads I gather that UTI are fairly common in diabetic dogs.
I use a spoon to gather Lucy's pee. So far it's generally nice & clear. When we first got her it would occasionally be a bit cloudy. Anything besides blood I should look for? Any other signs? I generally watch her for any excessive licking. Any other symptoms? Thanks. Rick |

Rick,
Have noticed that when you see cloudy urine, a lot of times that can be the first sign of a UTI and not just with a dog. For a diabetic, if you notice that the urine's not very concentrated, it can mean that there's more water drinking, so start wondering what the bg's are doing. There are other diseases that show up like this, including Diabetes Insipdus, so I'd say that if you can't pin it down to a regulation problem, it needs looking into. If you see the urine's very concentrated, that can mean not drinking enough water or dehydration. Let's continue our Crash Course on Pee with the input from others. ![]() Kathy |

UTIs will usually generate higher blood sugar and then, as a result, will cause more drinking and urinating from that for dogs who are fairly sensitive that way to higher BGs. Chris wasn't particularly so this wouldn't have been a sign for him. He wouldn't start consuming a lot of water until his blood sugar went very very high.
Also more frequent urinating in small quantities can be a sign. If her BGs start to climb - consistently or erratically, I'd suspect the UTI might be present excluding any other changes or countersurfing! Natalie |

Buddy was the king of UTI's and here's what I noticed with him.
Higher BG. Licking private parts after peeing. More drinking. More peeing, small amounts but often. Generally feeling unwell. Jenny |

Lucy has had loads of UTI's Signs and symptoms with Lucy
Licking at vulva after peeing but usually constantly licking. Urine dark coloured and cloudy. I cannot say frequent peeing as she always does this. BG's raised, urine readings off the scale. Usually very tired and wants to lie in her bed.I think this is why we have had a hard time getting her regulated. ![]()
