      • Re: Camellia Camelo - links for handpan jams at home

Colin Foulke, handpan-player and teacher and counselor extraordinaire, arrived here Thursday 17 May 2012, about 2:45 p.m., a few minutes earlier than I expected him. He left Sunday morning 20 May at 6:15 a.m., on schedule for his next jam sessions, with a friend on the mainland (BC, Canada).

My place is small, but we both fit in just fine, because Colin is the most wonderfully EASY houseguest to accommodate.

He'd been up since 4:30 a.m., yet, Thursday evening (17 May) played for over an hour for a dance class instructed by my neighbor Melody. I took Camellia with me, as she still can't be left home alone for longer than 10 minutes or so.

I couldn't record that event, as the light was insufficient. I danced a little myself, and otherwise, sat on the bench beside Colin, listened, and watched the dancers.

Apart from the fact that Colin played during any free-time period, here at the house (oh, GLORY! - his music is incredibly sweet and beautiful - all improvised, you understand), I got SOME bits recorded with my simple Point-and-Shoot camera. So this post is a pointer to links where you can watch Colin play, and listen to his music.

As for Camellia, the entire event, lasting three days, was pleasant enough, because she liked the music, but it was also flooding her badly; she couldn't get anything like enough rest. So Sunday, after Colin left, she simply slept all day; no walk; and the same yesterday, Monday. She seems more rested today - but she has a three-hour grooming session today! She'll hold up fine; she was clowning this morning like her usual self.

Here's the definitive (as of right now) list of links where you can see Colin playing in my house, see him teaching a couple of the dancers from Thursday night (Maeve and Caroline), see him and me playing together (he brought two handpans with him, and I was playing for the first time in my life, though I did have a bit of practice before the big session in the park.

We were blessed with good weather.

Colin is invited back here ANY time he can come! I think Camellia would be more comfortable on a second visit.

        Here's the list.

        My dear, dear friends.

I like to share my fun, at least a LITTLE bit, with all of you!

So, stuff you might enjoy looking at and listening to.

Colin arrived Thursday 17 May 2012, mid-afternoon. It didn't take him long to unpack, and he began playing one of the greatest of the world's pans - made by Victor Levinson of St. Peterburg, Russia. Victor is a genius at making these. HE doesn't call them "SPBs," but members of the forum (handpan.org) call them that (for "Saint Peterburg").

His entire visit was just wonderful!

About price for these instruments - each is handmade - maybe roughly, $2000.00 USD per instrument; add shipping (roughly $100 USD in the US - that would be for a Halo, made in USA). SPBs can't be shipped because of difficulties in Russia, so you have to GO there to get it! So add those costs. I'm only mentioning the Big Four here.

BellArt BElls - by Luis of Spain - you still have to go there, I believe; not sure. Shipping, if Luis ships, would cost!

The original Hang has changed a lot, and you have to write to the makers, and you might or might not be accepted to get on the waiting list. Current versions of the Hang are purposely tuned each only to itself, so can't easily be played with other instruments. Cost is probably about the same as the others, or might be a bit more, and I think you have to go there (Berne, Switzerland) to pick yours up - after a long, long wait, as again, there's a long waiting list. (Same for all the others.)

Talk about costing a lot of money!

I'm quite rushed, as Camellia has a grooming appointment today - three hours on her feet. Be back later.

I had a BAD shorter-version (TinyUrl) link in a previous post, and managed to edit the post and fix it; that link was to the Hang Insomniac Jam.

P.S. If you see a handpan advertised on EBay, be VERY careful, as most such sales are SCAMS! Check out the forum at

before buying ANY handpan off EBay.

I must indeed be getting old, as I'm still recovering from the huge effort (and loss to sleep) from the fabulous visit from Colin Foulke, with two of his handpans. (See my other thread on this forum, on that.)

Camellia is pretty well recovered now, thank goodness! DogDaddy George has finally returned from his camping trip, and stayed with Camellia yesterday, my weekly Hunt Day (shopping).

We are settling back into our usual routines; whew!

I see tiny improvements in Camellia's fear of other dogs - barely perceptible, but they are there!

And so, back to beddy-bye for an hour or so!

                      • Re: Camellia Camelo walks with another dog

On Friday 24 August (2012), Camellia turned a corner - a BIG milestone.

I wrote a report that day, sent it to the woman who delivered Camellia to me, and to a few friends.

                        Here's my report:

                        *** paste ***

We walked to A. and D. and back this morning, turning at the mailboxes. On the way back, Camellia went a little way up the driveway just off W. on our left as we return. Louise, whom I've known for years, was bringing Cairn Sarah down the driveway; we were in the way; I tried to bring Camellia back but without pulling. Louise picked Sarah up. (We'd met along the road some days ago - same thing; Louise picked Sarah up, but that time, didn't put her down till we were at some distance. We've passed each other on the road lots of times, and previously, Camellia has barked at Sarah, and Sarah, pulled on the leash, apparently trying to reach Camellia.)

This morning, after we'd walked a short way together, Camellia seemed calm, and Sarah was struggling a bit in-arms, so I suggested to Louise that she put Sarah down. Sarah wasn't too sure about Camellia - Camellia isn't that experienced with putting another dog at ease, and pursued her, but not rushing, and not trying to jump on Sarah. Louise and I started to walk along together, and that eased things for both dogs. They walked most
amiably, fairly close to each other, but independently.

After a time, both dogs were hot, and I gave Camellia a drink from her Gulpy water-bottle. Sarah was clearly thirsty too. She approached, and tried to get her nose in beside Camellia's, but the water-tray, while big enough for two small dog-noses, was really a cramped space for dogs just getting acquainted, especially because the water arrives only in trickles, as I keep squeezing the bottle, and I can't squeeze hard enough to keep the tray full. Then, when Camellia paused for a moment in her drinking, I offered the tray to Sarah - too early! Camellia wasn't ready for that; she stared, froze, and then gave a slight rush at Sarah.

I didn't say anything, but returned the Gulpy tray to Camellia, and she drank some more. THEN I offered to Sarah again, and Sarah got a drink that time. Camellia had gone off on the Flexi, no longer interested.

We resumed walking along. A couple of times, Camellia made gentle little play-rushes at Sarah, but Sarah was on a short leash and couldn't really play; she was friendly, though.

So, we had a very, VERY pleasant walk, and hope to repeat the experience at least occasionally - probably weekends, as Louise has to go back to work next week (she is a teacher).

Also, we're considering letting the dogs play off-leash in Camellia's and my tiny yard - which is just long enough to give two small dogs a bit of running room - back and forth. Louise doesn't have a fenced yard.

Our Miracle Day came two years, one week and one day after Camellia arrived to be my dog. I am SO HAPPY! Camellia REALLY enjoyed it! I've always wanted her to enjoy other dogs, but till now, it's seemed hopeless. I just kept the faith - never scolded her for barking at other dogs; never scolded her, period.

So now, Camellia has ONE dog-friend! I am SO delighted! Louise and I will get the dogs together occasionally, when we can, starting in our yard; eventually, Camellia might develop enough confidence to let Sarah in her house; we'll see!

This really IS a MIRACLE! Happy Camellia; happy me!

                        Keep the faith!

                        *** end paste ***

We managed another walk, two days later, and were out together for two hours. It was really lovely.

For a dog like Camellia, to get along with another dog requires that the dog be smaller than she, or at least, no larger, and that the handler be very savvy about dog-handling. Louise and Sarah met these qualifications.

Sarah is laid up with skin problems now, and some of the ones our diabetic dogs can get - some elevated liver values - Louise is keeping her at home - and she's on a course of Prednisone So Camellia and I will have to wait for another walk with Sarah,

Meantime, though, I see occasional TINY improvements in her responses to other dogs, as her usual habit, having been severely and constantly bullied by other dogs in the past, is to try to drive them away.

Looks, though, as if she's gaining some confidence that I'll protect her - and, of course, that helps.

                        Good girl, Camellia!

                        And yes, keep the faith!
