  • Re: Hattie's diagnosis

Thanks Carol.. l don't know how I would accurately measure a 4th unit..maybe would be below the line on 10 units?

Do you have 1/2 unit markings on your syringe?

10 1/4 units would be placing the top of the plunger between the 10 and the 10 1/2 unit markings.

Okay I see the 1/4 is right below the 10..the smaller needles which I bought and absolutely dislike don't have the half marks..I have a whole box of them going in the trash soon.......Thanks...

I just noticed after looking again that it would be really hard to get to that 1/4 dose...There is not much play between the 10 and the half..I don't think I can do it...When I pull the plunger the black part hits the 10 and there is no space except for the 1/2 unit to aim for...

You can do it...you want to see a THIN white line between the black 10 line and the plunger...that would be 1/4. It can be a little tricky but it can be done

I think I made some pictures to illustrate quarter-unit measurements. I'll look for them - I'm sure I did that!

If I have room in my albums, and I think I do, I'll upload them here, and give you a link.

Hey! Don't throw those syringes in the trash! Give them to one of your vets (you choose), and your vet likely has a client who can use them.

The syringes I used with Kumbi are shown here:

                http://www.coherentdog.org/vek/syringes1.php

                Are yours like that?

I'm going to go look for those pictures; hope to be back before I fall asleep - not guaranteeing that for the moment. but if I miss tonight, I'll be back later.

Whoever gets the syringes, I can tell you, will be EXCEEDINGLY grateful!

I did find the pictures - rather, just one, where, top to bottom, I was illustrating measuring 1/4 unit of insulin, then 1/2 unit, then 3/4 units, and finally, one unit. I put the picture in one of my photo albums here; here's the link:

                    http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/album.php?albumid=237

If I get time and don't fall asleep tomorrow, I'll try to illustrate 10.25 units, just to make you more comfortable!

Sleep well;with regards from Kwali and Kumbi (Bridge Dogs) and Camellia and me (Earth Dogs) - oops - one Earth Dog; one Earth Human.

                          • Re: Hattie's diagnosis

You're probably safe to start, say 5 July, hoping the fireworks are done by then. I feel very sure Hattie will be safe on the 10 units till then. So, that would be Tuesday, I believe.

I found a suitable photo in my collection, where I could mark 10.25 units. The photo isn't perfect, but I hope it will help; here's a link to it:

                            http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/albu...pictureid=1290

The red marks are a bit thin, so you might have to zoom in a bit to see them clearly. I marked the upper barrel on the 10.25 unit mark - but its plunger is in the wrong place! So disregard the position of the plunger in that top syringe.

In the bottom one, the plunger isn't even present, but I marked the 10-unit with a thicker red line, and the 10.25 unit with a teeny thin red line.

Tips about getting that tricky measurement:

Start by withdrawing, say, 10.5 units, or maybe slightly more - CAREFUL - do NOT inject till you get rid of the extra!

Then put the syringe under a good light, twist-push the plunger (perhaps over the sink!) - and eject one drop, pick up your magnifying glass, and check the dose! Repeat till you see you're very close to right. You'll soon get the hang of it - just takes a little practice, and staying clear in your mind just what you want for your dose.

Ejecting the extra insulin is what you MUST remember to do, when you take a bit too much from the vial. But it's MUCH easier to measure quarter-units if you eject the extra over the sink (in the air) instead of trying to eject it back into the vial. Sorry about that! You lose a bit of insulin that way, but not a lot.

Kumbi's highest dose was 7.5 units, and I always had extra in the vial by the time the five weeks was up (five weeks before I retired the vial from use, for being too old). I saved those vials anyway - had a fridge full of them!

NOW I'm going to bed; ha! Love and hugs,

                                That's at 10 units of Humulin-N insulin?

If so, gosh; just HOLD STEADY with that dose; it's looking wonderful! 149 is great for a low number, and the others aren't too high.
