  • What is Relion insulin?

    This question used to come up a lot at the other board, whether the WalMart ReliOn brand insulins were safe to consider using. WalMart contracts Novo Nordisk to produce these insulins under the ReliOn/Novolin brand. They are the same insulins which you get if you buy any of the Novolin brand insulin with the only difference being the price.

    http://www.relion.com/diabetes/insulin.htm

    "ReliOnŽ/NovolinŽ is manufactured for Wal-Mart by Novo Nordisk, the world's leader in insulin production. ReliOnŽ/NovolinŽ insulin is available in three formulations: R (regular), N (NPH), and 70/30 (70% NPH, 30% regular). If you're currently using another brand of human insulin, changing to ReliOnŽ/NovolinŽ could save you over $150 per year!"

    And here you can see that the label says Novolin in addition to ReliOn.
    ReliOn comes in R/Regular, N/NPH and 70/30 types.

    http://www.relion.com/information/faq-insulin.htm

    "Is this a "generic" insulin?
    No. There are no generic insulin products. NovolinŽ is a brand name for human insulin (rDNA origin) which is sold in Wal-Mart under the ReliOnŽ logo.

    "Who makes this insulin?
    Novo Nordisk, a worldwide leader in diabetes cares and insulin development, makes this human insulin. Since the discovery of insulin in 1921, virtually every major breakthrough in diabetes treatment has originated in Novo Nordisk laboratories.

    "Is there a difference between the way this and other human insulin products work?
    No. All human insulin products work the same way to lower your blood glucose levels."

    Reli On NPH insulin has a different look now

    Slight differnce in box and product numbers changed a bit
    I bought a new bottle, they have changed the box a little bit, I made sure it was the right insulin

    old number on box was # 0169-1834-11
    new number # 59060-1834-2

    I assume the 1834 is the product number and that front number must be a batch number or where it was made.

    No problems using it with Niki

      Insulin, Syringes, Injections

      A while back, if you bought Novo Nordisk insulin, it had to be brought in vialed from Denmark. Since then, that's no longer the case.

      http://www.novonordisk.com/press/pho...ory=Production

      Novo Nordisk insulin manufacturing plant--Clayton, North Carolina

      http://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/projects/novo/

      This plant in Kalundborg, Denmark, is where all Novo insulins begin.
      It's the fermentation plant where their bulk insulin is produced.

      "Novo Nordisk turns over DKK25.2bn annually and around 70% of this comes from insulin products. The company is making large investments around the world in new fill and finishing facilities, particularly in Chartres in France, Clayton in North Carolina, US, and in Montes Claros, Brazil. All of these new facilities will receive bulk insulin from the Kalundborg facility for fill, finishing and distribution."

      The bulk insulin comes to them from the Danish plant highly purified and ready for the last step in producing insulin. What happens at Clayton, NC is that the bulk insulin is combined with the proper excipients (suspension, if any, preservatives, etc.), the vials are filled and capped, and it's then put into packaging, ready for sale.

      Since Novo makes the ReliOn|Novolin insulins for WalMart-Sam's Club, they also come from here.

        Re: Need a copy of the Relion N and Humulin N package inserts

        FYI for future reference.....

        I found quite some time ago that if you go to the manufacturers website, such as Novo Nordisk, and search, 'patient package insert' it will bring up a copy of the insert.

        http://www.novonordiskcare.com/searc...submit_btn.y=6

        And, Eli Lilly's Humulin N

        Adding this link too as there has been some confusion at times as to whether Walmart's ReliOn Novolin N is a generic insulin, it is NOT.

          Re: Need a copy of the Relion N and Humulin N package inserts

          Natalie - this site http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed...rchiveid=19391 has what appears to be everything you ever wanted to know about Novolin N. Pages aren't numbered but if you scroll down a bit it does show:

          Novolin N ingredients include:

          * Human Insulin Isophane Suspension (recombinant DNA origin)

          * Metacresol

          * Zinc chloride

          * Glycerol

          * Sodium hydroxide

          * Hydrochloric acid

          * Phenol

          * Protamine sulfate

          * Disodium phosphate dihydrate

          * Water for injections

          All Novolin N vials are latex-free.
