I think you would probably find that anything affecting the spinal cord would give you that handful of symptoms. There are many different kinds of myelopathies, and whether the front legs are affected is one way of distinguishing where the problem is located.

There also are a handful of simple tests that are noninvasive and inexpensive that can quickly narrow down what kind of problem she might have and where it is located if it is in the spine.

So it would be very useful to have those done, ideally by a neurologist who can assess the responses much better than most GP vets.

But even the GP vet can do a few simple tests to see if the problem seems to be communication over the spinal cord or something else, like back pain or an ear problem.

There are three specialists that I think are absolutely 100% worth the investment - ophthalmology, cardiology, and neurology.

So many times, I have seen one of these specialists quickly and correctly identify a problem a GP vet has been lost in diagnosing and treating.

Our GP vet for Chris was better than most. He saw Chris after an episode of Chris being unable to stand or walk and recognized that while some of the symptoms looked like vestibular syndrome, some of them did not, which is a fine distinction that comes down even to which way the eyes zigzag when the body is in a particular position. He sent us straight to the neurologist.

Most GP vet's repertoires for these things consist of vestibular syndrome and DM when in fact there are many other possibilities.

So depending on what you find out, if it looks to be spinal, the investment in a good neurologist is definitely worth it.

          Hi all,

On the recommendation of Ladybug's vet, she changed her diet quite a bit..in addition to the WD can and dry, she added chicken thigh meat, four eggs a week and cottage cheese. This was because she is not gaining weight on the WD and on her blood work done last week, her albumin level was low at 1.66.

          I have two questions:

#1 - She said to use boneless skinless chicken thighs. The are very expensive so can I just buy bone-in chicken thighs, take off the skin, simmer them and then take the meat off the bone? Or is there another way to cook them? I can't handle deboning them, made my stomach sort of queasy.

#2 - She said to give her four eggs a week so I split one egg between AM and PM for four days. I have been scrambling them but can I also hard boil them? An egg is an egg, right?

We are going to try this diet until November and check her blood again. If she has not improved, then she said we'll try liver.

So, except for her weight and protein level, she is A+ and healthy!

By the way, I'm sorry I didn't reply to my other issue back in October but all the vet did was clean her one ear and put in some drops. She was fine by the next day.

Thanks jesse girl...you just made my life easier. There was a sale on family pack chicken thighs this week and I bought enough to last about 2-3 months. At least I don't have to worry about deboning them!

love those sales . i actually buy the 5 dozen eggs for about $ 7 .50 but thats probably a bit to much for you guys . i can keep them for about a month and had no problems with spoiling . i have even froze the hard boiled eggs but they are kind of funky when they are thawed .

jesse, I always have 3 dozen eggs in the fridge. I eat a hard cooked egg every day for lunch plus I do a lot of baking. You're right, five dozen eggs would be a lot for us.

Mo, thanks for answering. I do hope this does the trick with her weight gain. We have until November to try and get everything in check. The vet wants her up to 27 lbs., 30 at the most.
