  • Lou and Bo (Bodine) - Hi everyone

My name is Lou and my best buddy is Bodine , I want to start out by first off thanking Natalie for allowing me to join this website so I can gain some knowledge from all of you fine people

Also I want to thank her once again for taking the time to check me out so all of members here are protected from the EVIL SPAMMERS out there ... says a lot to me when a administrator of a site takes the time to ensure their members safety and peaceful coexistence ya know .. so yeah ..thanks Natalie

Well here it goes ... as I said our names are Lou and Bo ... we just found out about a week and a half ago Bo has Diabetes , I took Bo in about 7 years ago after he was rescued from an evil non caring individual , the neighbors that had taken him in could not keep him because of their two dogs attacking Bo ... well not really attacking him per say but giving him a real rough time cause he was scared of his own shadow ya know .. hiding in the back corner of the yard pacing the fence worrying and such

Funny how it happened .. we were out one night shopping and on the way home I just got a felling that I was going to be getting him . my girlfriend of course said I was nuts cause she is used to my premonitions but like I told her the feeling was strong and sure enough when we pulled up my neighbor came out with a tear in his eye at which point I smiled at my girl and before he could say a word I told him to get his leash , the guy just looked at me and started blabbing about how his dogs ..and poor Bo yada yada yada LOL... the reason I bring this up is because of these ?? feelings ? premonitions ..or what ever they are seem to happen a lot sometimes .. I don't know ... all I can say is right now I have a brand new Precision Xtra Diabetes system sitting in front of me that I picked up at the Acme for a dollar on clearance about two months ago ??? I always say there is a reason for everything and here ya go LOL

Anyways yeah .. we got Bo and he was a real sweetheart but afraid of everything , we couldn't get him to eat for a week and then one day Me Bo and Jake (our other dog) were out back and to be honest I was pretty bummed at how shy and scared Bo still was so to break the ice I told Jake to go get em LOL... ah it was funny ..Jake looked at me .. then Bo looked at me then Both of em looked at each other and then looked back at me like I was nuts and then I said it again ..gave Jake wink and off they went , I figured Bo would definitely run once ole Jake got to chasing him but also I knew at 100+ lbs Bo wouldn't be running too long and hopefully stop and stand his ground ..which he did and they have been brothers ever since

Bo has always been a heavy dog I suppose .. he is a 8 or 9 year old Chocolate Lab and always one of the kindest dogs I have ever had , his real best buddy is our little princess Miss Vivian ...she is a heart breaking lil fuzzball that basically runs this place when it needs running LOL... if ya ever heard of a cat standing up to a doberman that's her .. all sweet and innocent looking till ya cross her then .. well then ya better start apologizing real quick like and preferably with some treats if ya know whats good for ya hehe

Anyways about a month ago I started noticing Bo wasn't feeling so good .. during the summer he always gets a skin irritation that bums him out bu this time something was different ... he just dint have the ummff he normally has and then the weight started coming off , at first I dug it since he has problems with his hips like so many other Labs but then he started to throw up his water or anything else he woofed down ( not one for chewing his food if ya know what I mean ) and the final get him to the vet symptom was the lose of his bladder while sleeping which really bummed him out ( me too since my bed was the first place to get it ) since he has never done that before

We made an appointment and to be honest I was real worried it would be something that would put him down but as it turned out he was diagnosed with Diabetes and after finding out it was treatable we were relieved and even more so when the vet offered their one year no interest billing , I need to put this out there so here it goes

I too have some major health problems that have been keeping me from living like I once did and we all know how expensive that can be especially if insurance is something everyone else has but not you , I have been out of work for about 2 years now and even with the new pacemaker I recently had put in thanks to the county it doesn't look like I will be working anytime too soon so like I said money is tight around here thus the reason I want to join this site

I need ..want to be able to care for Bo but I also need to do it on the cheap ... you know .. off the shelf non $90 a bag food .. good treats so he doesn't decide to eat me ( loves his milk bones and better have at least 4-5 a day or else LOL) or one of the cats >> nah only kidding .. the cats are safe .. its me that has to worry haha

So yeah I know this is long but to give ya a heads up I don't mince words or beat around the bush much and I just wanted to put it out there that we do not have a lot of money to be spending here so any and all advice I will be asking for will be on the low end side if ya get my drift .. LOL ..the other side of the tracks as they say .... I sure do wish things were better but hey it is what it is and ya make the best of it ya know .. well at least we do

I have so many questions that I want to warn ya's straight out that I can be a bit dense at times when I get emotional and for sure I am emotional when it comes to my buddy Bo .. by the way that's his mug in my avatar .. cute bugger int he .. so yeah if ya have to scream at me to get me to understand something have at it .. as long as it's friendly help your giving and not some evil trolling behavior I can handle it and I will definitely appreciate it

Thank you once again Natalie and to all of you that took the time to read this I thank you and hope peace is with you and yours

    Lou ..Bo's Buddy

P.S. get ready for the questions soon hehe

    Re: Hi everyone

Welcome Bo and Lou, I understand you completely, I was at first buying the high priced dogfood from the vet which was not helping with BG anyway.

As far as RX's i used walmart's brand of Insulin NPH Relion, that Eli Lily insulin I assumed I had to buy, the vet never told me about the Walmart brand.

You will find here that we can figure how to find and cut costs of some med's, I was using a $90.00 bottle of pain med, i could buy in tablet form for $ 4.00.

Niki eats homecooked with Nutro Senior in it, you can find Nutro Senior at the Feed/Farm stores or maybe at Petco, it runs about 32.00 for the large bag which i used to buy when i had 3 dogs. I have tried all the others, you name it from Expensive to cheaper but this one worked best with her diabetes.

I don't know if you posted to the main board but I will give you the link,
    http://k9diabetes.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2

here you can post weight, insulin dose, food etc to give us an idea about your dog so we can look back and help you in anyway, we are all here for any questions you may have

      Hi Lou!

      Bo is SO handsome!!!

As I noted on the copy of your thread over on Stories, I put a copy of it here as this is the main forum in which current discussions happen. I want to keep Bodine's "story" to date over on the other pages as well, but this is the place to post your questions and keep the discussion going.

We concentrate on one dog, one thread - so everything you want to tell us or ask us about Bo should be made as a Reply here. That way we can build up his whole history over time.

After all this admin stuff, I haven't had a chance to actually read his story yet! That's next on my list!!

      Welcome,

      Natalie

Re: Lou and Bo (Bodine) - Hi everyone

Ha, well we are devils for details so I already have some questions to throw at you!

Have you already started giving insulin?

If so, what kind of insulin is it and what is the dosage?

        How much does Bo weigh?

What food is he currently eating?

A month ago I started noticing Bo wasn't feeling so good
        Weight started coming off
Started to throw up his water or anything else he woofed down
Loss of his bladder while sleeping
Prescription diets generally are not necessary and are even falling out of favor as they often don't provide any benefit.

If you have access to Wal-mart that is definitely the most affordable place to get insulin. NPH was recently less than $30 a bottle and the syringes are affordable there as well.

Vetsulin/Caninsulin would be more expensive and I wouldn't necessarily want to start a large dog like Bo on that insulin as he might need quite a few units. Which makes it expensive and a lot of volume to inject as it's a more dilute insulin solution.

Depending on what he eats now, you might not need to make any changes.

And glad to hear you have a blood glucose meter! That will save you lots of money on veterinary bills. If you haven't seen them already, there are videos and tutorials on how to home test blood glucose at the k9diabetes main site: www.k9diabetes.com/bgtestvideos.html. The one of Chris is a large file so if you want to watch it you'll need a cup of coffee and a brief distraction.... but it shows testing on the lip, which probably would be ideal for Bo if he will let you test there.

If you can fill us in on where Bo is in his treatment, we can offer additional suggestions.

Re: Lou and Bo (Bodine) - Hi everyone

Just saying WELCOME!!!!! We all try to save money with diabetes and multiple pets, hope we can help you! I try to save money because I have 7 dogs and 12 cats and a buck is a buck and who knows what might happen!?

Never heard of a vet billing that way but it's great! Diabetes CAN be costly in the begining.

Fill us in on Bo and what's going on with his diabetes!
Denise, Bogie (diabetic, cushings, now cancer), Molly (diabetic)
Reba (Cushings) and the other 12 cats and 4 dogs.

Welcome Lou and Bo! Yes indeed, diabetes is far from cheap in the beginning. Gets little better in the long run! I am sure you'll find all the answers to your questions here. Lots of knowledge and experience on this forum.
            Best wishes.
