  • Diabetic dog peeing in the house

Our 10 yr old, miniature schnauzer was diagnosed with diabetes this year. She get 9 units of insulin 2x a day and her blood sugar levels are good. However, she just started peeing in the house at night. She just finished a round of antibiotics for a possible UTI, but she is still peeing in the house. Not sure what else to do?

Since her blood sugar is okay she may need another round or a different round of antibiotics. Most diabetic dogs need a 21 day round of antibiotics rather than the regular 14 day regime.

Hi! Welcome to the forum! Typically, when they get any type of infection, their blood sugar goes up and they begin to show those symptoms- excessive drinking and peeing. Some antibiotics can also cause the blood sugar to go up temporarily so that adds to it. Considering it is a UTI, it would cause frequent peeing until it clears up. So, a UTI is the “perfect storm” for this. Give her some time, and with the antibiotics, it will likely get better.

My Maggie used to get frequent UTI’s to the point of being antibiotic resistant. I started her on a powder called D Mannose with her food. It worked like a charm. I never noticed it having any effect on her blood sugar. You can find it at a health food store that sells supplements. I am not one to recommend a ton of extra add ins because sometimes things can backfire but this really made a huge difference.

Do you test blood sugar at home? I tested Maggie at home because she had episodes of low blood sugar. I could actually tell with a slight elevation in her blood sugar that she was getting an infection. If you are testing levels at home, you might could temporarily do a small increase in insulin. But, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you test at home.

Schnauzers are typically very hard to regulate because of their naturally high tryglycerides. Around here, we call it schnauzer syndrome but it is not impossible. Sounds like things were going well for you guys so no reason to expect the numbers won’t go back to those levels once the infection clears. Make sure she is drinking plenty of water. I know it causes more peeing but it also helps flush sugar.
Maggie - 15 1/2 y/o JRT diagnosed 9/2007, Angel status on 6/20/16. Her mantra was never give up but her body couldn't keep up with her spirit. Someday, baby.......

Thank you! She was up every hour last night. Yes, we test her at home with the alpha trak meter.
