  • Re: Bagel joins the group and Mommy is melting

She has never had a low before...and it was 325 before dinner...

She has been sleeping for the last hour since she threw the rest up...

I am sooo praying it is not pancreatitis....

      Sandy,
I'm sorry Bagel's not well. I agree with Alison's advice. Glad she was here to address the lysodren. I'd check bg's periodically tonight.

If she's still unwell in the morning, do you have the number for your regular vet? Perhaps you could run things by him/her and decide if she needs to go to the ER.

But as Alison said, if she goes low tonight and won't eat, I'd head to the emergency so they could give a glucose drip if needed.

Pancreatitis crossed my mind as well. The ER could run a test for it tomorrow if she's still unwell in the morning.

Sorry to hear that Bagel's tummy is upset. I think actually I would intentionally withhold food tomorrow morning and give 1/4 of the usual insulin dose as long as the blood sugar is at least 200. If it's less, maybe reduce the dose a bit more.

Any time I have a critter with diarrhea or throwing up, I withhold food for at least 24 hours to give the stomach a chance to rest.

OH Natalie I JUST saw your post.....AFTER I DID the following......do you think we'll be Ok??

here is what I just posted.

            *******
Well she slept fine all night.
Her Bgs were 187 which is much lower for HER but a great number...

She ate her DCO with a tiny bit of deli turkey just fine...I cut the amount of kibble a little..

I gave her 20 U instead of 22 of insulin....
All is well an hour later...

Her poop was solid this morning....

Could this have just been a fluke from hell?

too much water drinking that caused her to throw it all up?

            Allergies to the extreme pollen?

I am walking on eggshells and hoping I did the right thing with food and insulin...

will leave her for 4 hours to go to church- neighbor checking in hopefully in this cold rainy weather today...

honestly I forgot the way these posts appear, and I missed several of them this morning...

So it is 2 hrs since breakfast and shot of 2 U less..( 20 instead of 22)

She had a "normal" start to the day..outside. poop was solid, ate fine...

rested with me on the couch til I went to the showers= then to the bed at the window..

              She is sleeping fine now..

She drank SO much water after supper last night...The amount she threw up looked like 3 times what I fed her...maybe it swelled up so much it had to come back?

I appreciate all the input here....and am So thankful for SPRING BREAK from school this week so I can be here with her...

I was going to call the vet this Am like you suggested- but since she seems good now I will wait on that, and have my neighbor check on her mid morning...
THANKS SO MUCH and keep those thoughts and ideas coming!

                Sande,
Glad Bagel is sounding better. Too much water can be a culprit if she drank a ton. Ali gets reflux when she drinks too much too fast.
Hoping you have a peaceful day.

it has been a fabulous day....I came home from church and all was well..
We took a long nap and I just can't stop hugging her...

She is licking her bowl and it is still 1.5 hours til dinner.....

Maybe it was the water? I am watching her like a hawk but feeling a lot better right now..

thanks for all the replies...it is SO much help and encouragement to have this place!!

She has gradually grown the cataracts but she still has some vision...
Doesn't seem to be in pain...( She has Cushings- takes Lysodren/ and also takes tramadol for a knee flap thing..so that would mask some pain probably)..Because of the Cushings, she has never regulated- some days 400s and the next day, like today, 108....
As the day progresses- 2 hours later, the eye is not red so much- We just went on a nice walk b/c there is a new dog in the condos and she IS a beagle /bassett...so we have sniffed and walked a good 20 minutes...

                          Sande -

Hope Bagel's eye is getting a bit better, or at least the vet it open soon so you can get some answers.

In my experience, I'm pretty sure you can use people eye drops in dogs. You could probably use a drop of visine or some other "tears" type drop in an emergency. It may not effect the redness, but may flush the eye a bit and give some comfort. It shouldn't do any damage.

I say this because after Buddy's eye surgery, they essentially gave him the same eye drops I was using for my glaucoma!

Talk to your vet to be sure though!

And let us know how Bagel is doing (love that name! LOL)

                            • Re: red eye

I have a cush/diabetic dog who went blind from cataracts and I had the surgery 6 months ago. I also have a diabetic dog.

I hope you can take your dog to an Eye Specialist, they know so much more than a GP, it's pretty impressive what they can tell about the eye.

One dog had diabetic cataracts, the other dog has "old age" cataracts they are different. The one with old age cataracts can still see some, the diabetic cataracts quickly took all sight away. But only an Eye Specialist can tell the difference, believe me they looked the same to me.

I wouldn't use Visine or an over the counter human eye drop. But yes prescription medications for human eyes can be used in dogs eyes. I use Diclofenac which is an NSAID (prescription) and can be gotten at Rite Aid on their "plan" for 8.99, a lot cheaper than the vet. I also am using an antibiotic (human) prescription $3.99 called Tobramycin, Fred Meyers has it for that price if you are on the west coast.

I recommend you get your dogs eyes checked by an Eye Specialist, and also ask for BP test as well, they are pretty inexpensive.

Do not let them prescribe ANY steroid eye drop, it will affect their Cushings, believe me. No steroid eye drops for Cush dogs EVER.

PS the redness could be due to many things, allergies, infection, etc.

Red eyes can also be due to slightly elevated blood pressure. My last newfie had high blood pressure and would get a reddening of the eye whites. He never took any meds for it and it would come and go....
